With God On Our Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America, by William Martin

The rise of the Religious Right is one of the most important political and cultural stories of our time.To many, this controversial movement threatens to upset the nation's delicate balance of religious and secular interests. To others, the Religious Right is valiantly struggling to preserve religious liberty and to prove itself as the last, best hope to save America's soul.In With God on Our Side --the first balanced account of conservative Christians' impact on post-war politics--William Martin paints a vivid and authoritative portrait of America's most powerful political interest group.

Although its members now number between forty and sixty million people, the Religious Right has not always carried the tremendous--and growing--political clout it enjoys today.A hundred years ago, scattered groups of conservative Christians worked fervently to spread the Gospel, but their involvement in politics was marginal.Early in this century, however, a series of charismatic and ambitious leaders began transforming the movement; by the election of John F. Kennedy as our first Catholic president, the Religious Right had found its voice.Politics and religion began mixing as never before. From Richard Nixon's strategic manipulation of Graham's religious influence in the 1970s, to Ronald Reagan's association with Falwell's Moral Majority in the 1980s, to the Christian Coalition's emergence as a slick, sophisticated political machine, the line separating the pulpit from the presidency became increasingly blurred. Now, preachers such as Graham, Falwell, and Pat Robertson preside over ministries so vast and well organized that most politicians can ill afford to ignore their views--or lose their votes.

In recent years, the Religious Right's political influence has propelled it into spheres beyond pure politics.Race relations, abortion and reproductive rights, school curricula, the nature and role of the family--conservative Christians have embraced all of these socially charged issues, and their activism has irrevocably altered the way America confronts its thorniest problems. How does a free society draw the line between Church and State without removing religious conviction from public life? What motivates individual Americans to do battle in the culture wars? Most importantly, when politicians and religiously motivated activists join forces, who holds the reins?

Drawing on over 100 new interviews with key figures in the movement, William Martin brilliantly captures the spirit of the age as he explores both sides of
this dramatic debate.Written in conjunction with the producers of the public television series of the same name, this landmark book is essential reading for all Americans--conservative and liberal, fundamentalist and atheist--who care about the spiritual health and political future of our country.

From Publishers Weekly
The confluence of politics and religion in American life is explored with insight and style in this important new book from Martin (A Prophet With Honor), a professor of sociology at Rice University. Focusing on the modern era, the author analyzes the significance of church and clergy in the tradition of social action, from the civil rights movement through the growth of the Christian Coalition. In a blend of fast-paced journalism and in-depth scholarship, the text incorporates numerous interviews with, and personal accounts by, key figures, weaving together many frayed threads of meaning in contemporary American political life. Scrupulously fair, pointing out what he sees as the media's biases and double standards, Martin details the events and personalities that have infused our politics with religious fervor. From JFK's Catholicism to Billy Graham's flirtation and subsequent disillusionment with politicians; from Jimmy Carter's born-again candidacy to the rise of evangelical political action groups; from Ronald Reagan's courtship of the Moral Majority to the current configuration of the surprisingly diverse religious right, Martin deftly guides the grand tour, putting the fiery social issues of our times?abortion, homosexuality, public education, AIDS and gun control?in the context of the conservative Christian agenda. Martin concludes with a masterful essay on the subtle interpretation of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison regarding separation of church and state, affirming their non-ironic proposition that the health of America's religious communities derives from being apart from the corrupting power of politics. From Library Journal
Martin (Prophet with Honor: The Billy Graham Story, LJ 11/1/91), an authority on the history and sociology of religion, is well-qualified to examine the phenomenon of the religious right. Starting with an excellent summary of American religious history, he goes on to devote the bulk of his book to developments in the last 50 years. Martin puts his emphasis on the political and social influence of such groups as the Moral Majority and the Christian Coalition. He explains the importance of such famous figures as Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, and Ralph Reed. Martin also examines the "culture wars" that fuel the struggle. There is a wealth of information and thoughtful analysis here that brings the reader's understanding down to the immediate present. Martin clearly understands the political danger of a powerful religious Right, which seeks to stifle all dissent. He fails, however, to acknowledge the equally heavy-handed agenda of the humanist Left, which, in part, has given rise to the problem. Recommended for public and academic libraries.?C. From Booklist
The biographer of Billy Graham (A Prophet with Honor, 1991) surveys the wider landscape of the white Protestant Evangelical community, emphasizing its political forays since 1960. After summarizing its past history as reflected in the careers of such come-to-Jesus preachers as Billy Sunday, Martin astutely examines the personalities, organizations, and galvanizing events that have energized this potent voting bloc. Graham is, of course, the most durable figure, once assiduously courted by presidents but burned by his close association with Nixon. During the 1970s, Evangelicals recoiled from America's perceived descent into moral turpitude, a reaction Martin analytically narrates along with the stories of conservative activists who promoted school prayer and battled the ERA, abortion, sex education, and gay rights. The Evangelicals first influenced a national election in 1980, when Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority and its allies delivered for Ronald Reagan. Though Falwell's star waned, conservatives such as Pat Robertson and Ralph Reed continued to organize Evangelicals but with ambivalent results: though they count in elections, little of their religio-social agenda has yet been enacted into law. That, no doubt, is a comfort in some quarters. Still, Martin's sympathetic yet objective work provides some insights into the Evangelicals' outlook and recent history. Considering the tie-in to the three-part, six-hour PBS series of the same name as the book, beginning on September 27, librarians can expect requests. Gilbert Taylor

An excellent overview and reliable place to start.
By grapabo
This book is pretty solid in documenting the history of the religious right in America. Although much of the focus is on the last half of the 20th century, the introduction and the epilogue give some background on the interaction between Christianity and government in the previous period.
I haven't seen the PBS television series that this book accompanies, so some things in the book probably impact a little differently than seeing video or audio accounts, especially so in a movement that makes so much use of oral speeches and broadcasts. But at least in the written account, the balance is kept between fair treatment and criticism of the different elements of the movement. This is no easy feat, given the sometimes inflammatory rhetoric both by the Christian right and against it.
The chapters of the book appear to reflect an episode format, with varying types of focal points telling the story in a roughly chronological order. One chapter profiles a person (--Billy Graham) while other chapters highlight in depth a local conflict (such as the battle over sex education in Anaheim and the school book battle in West Virginia), while others talk primarily about the formation of the major activist groups (Moral Majority, and then later the Christian Coalition). One trend appears to be that as the Judeo-Christian culture lost its monopoly in the political process, the struggle has been for the Christian right (in whatever form it took at the time) to keep its place at the table while keeping to its core values. Even at the end of the book (which ends with mid-1996), this conflict was not resolved.
The book also focuses on personal profiles of the individuals in the involvement, which also provides some more depth about what many people might lump together as monolithic. The differences between Jerry Falwell's background (the rural son of an alcoholic father) and Pat Robertson (the son of a U.S. senator) are pointed out in light of the interaction (or lack thereof) at certain points when they would be considered natural allies on the surface. And at a time in the 1980s when most Christian preachers and conservative commentators were considering the possibility of quarantining or tatooing AIDS patients, one televangelist said:
"How sad that we as Christians, who ought to be the salt of the earth, and we, who are supposed to be able to love everyone, are afraid so of an AIDS patient that we will not go up and put our arm around them and tell them that we care."
The televangelist? Tammy Faye Bakker.
For those seeking to learn about the movement without the whitewash or the ridicule that accompanies most assessments of the Christian right, this book is the best place to start.

Crucial to an objective understanding
By Sebastian Good
William Martin's With God on Our Side offers a sympathetic yet objective look at the evolution of Christian fundamentalism in America over the last 50 years, culminating in the rise of the Christian Coalition and the Religious Right. Written in conjunction with a PBS series of the same title, Martin's book contains both a detailed overview and plenty of first-hand accounts of events that have transformed what was once a politically non-existent group into one of the most important voting blocs in America. No matter which side of the fence you fall on, this book is a must for students of both religion and politics.

Comprehensive Overview of the 20th century
By Will Jerom
Martin's book is a fairly comprehensive review of the politics of the right - religious and political - in the twentieth century. It stands separately, but as a good companion to the PBS series of the same name. With God on Our Side has extensive tracts of information (mostly from interviews) on Billy Graham, Ralph Reed, Pat Robertson and the Christian Coalition, as well as Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority. It seems fairly objective in its presentation. I highly recommend it for those wishing a deep and fairly well-balanced account of the Christian Right (it is better as a review or prep book for a professor or graduate than for an undergraduate text). The book's detail declines after the first Bush Administration. It has less information on the Clinton era, and almost none on the Presidency of Bush Jr. Overall a good work, rooted in what seems to be a solid review.

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda (Origami Yoda #1), by Tom Angleberger

In this funny, uncannily wise portrait of the dynamics of a sixth-grade class and of the greatness that sometimes comes in unlikely packages, Dwight, a loser, talks to his classmates via an origami finger puppet of Yoda. If that weren’t strange enough, the puppet is uncannily wise and prescient. Origami Yoda predicts the date of a pop quiz, guesses who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and saves a classmate from popularity-crushing embarrassment with some well-timed advice. Dwight’s classmate Tommy wonders how Yoda can be so smart when Dwight himself is so clueless. With contributions from his puzzled classmates, Tommy assembles this first case file in the blockbuster bestselling Origami Yoda series, written by Tom Angleberger, author of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi: Beware the Power of the Dark Side, and hailed by School Library Journal as “honest, funny, and immensely entertaining.”

From School Library Journal
Grade 3–6—For Tommy, the only question is whether or not Origami Yoda is real. Of course he's real as a small puppet on Dwight's finger. But does the oracle possess magic power? In order to find out, he decides to compile scientific evidence from the experiences of those who asked Origami Yoda for help. His friend Harvey is invited to comment on each story because he thinks Yoda is nothing but a "green paper wad." Tommy also comments because he's supposedly trying to solve the puzzle. In actuality, the story is about boys and girls in sixth grade trying to figure out how being social works. In fact, Tommy says, "…it's about this really cool girl, Sara, and whether or not I should risk making a fool of myself for her." The situations that Yoda has a hand in are pretty authentic, and the setting is broad enough to be any school. The plot is age-old but with the twist of being presented on crumpled pages with cartoon sketches, supposed hand printing, and varying typefaces. Kids should love it.—Sheila Fiscus, Our Lady of Peace School, Erie, PA

From Booklist
Tommy and his friends think that Dwight is a weirdo who’s “always talking about robots or spiders or something.” In true Dwight fashion, he shows up at school one day brandishing a little origami Yoda finger puppet. The really weird thing is that it doles out very un-Dwight-like bits of wisdom, and the mystery is whether the Yoda is just Dwight talking in a funny voice or if it actually has mystical powers. The book is structured as a collection of stories gathered by Tommy and told by kids who either believe or don’t. See, Tommy has a more vested interest than just idle curiosity—he is dying to know if he can trust Yoda’s advice about asking the cute girl to dance with him at the PTA Fun Night. Origami Yoda—a sort of talking cootie catcher—is the kind of thing that can dominate all those free moments in school for a few weeks. Angleberger’s rendering of such a middle-grade cultural obsession is not only spot-on but also reveals a few resonant surprises hidden in the folds. Naturally, Yoda-making instructions are included. Grades 4-6. --Ian Chipman

Vastly entertaining... but...
By M. Heiss
Tom Angleberger gets the relationships of boys-not-yet-men exactly right. The self-consciousness, the silliness, the high-strung emotions, the intense wanting to be grown-up, the embarrassment, the awkwardness, how hard it is to avoid taking the easy way out, and how loyalty to your friends is the right thing.

This is a book about friendship and loyalty, with a great plot about "will he ask the girl to dance?" And a surprising finger puppet who knows all the answers.

Great on plot and characterization -- marvelous side doodles and illustrations that go with the case file. Directions for making Origami Yoda at home.

Now the bad news. Fart-face. Scared the bejeezus out of me. Crap. You're an idiot. I'm an idiot. You're a moron. You're a jerk. You're stupid. He's a loser. You're a loser. You're so stupid. I'm a loser. You weirdo. Bejeezus.

My family of boys ranges in age all the way down to kindergarten. What big brother reads, little brother repeats. Do I want to sanction these words? Three stars.

Update -- try "The Qwikpick Adventure Society" by Sam Riddleburger. Funny book, similar journaling style, more wholesome (although it features poop as the main part of the adventure.)

Update -- The follow on book, "Darth Paper," is almost entirely free of the objectionable language in this book. Well done, Mr. Angleberger!

Flamingnet.com Top Choice Book-I was really captured by this book.
By Flamingnet Teen Book Reviews
Imagine yourself, a loser in middle school with loser
friends. At every opportunity to get the girl you like to
like you, it never happens. But that might all change.

When Tommy sees the finger puppet of Yoda that that
loser Dwight has on his finger, it seems ordinary. Same
old origami, same good origami it's the same as always.
But when origami Yoda starts to give people advice, good
advice, things change. Since Dwight is such a loser, his
advice should be bad too, right? But Yoda's advice is,
well, Yoda-like. When Tommy starts to think about asking
a girl to a dance, he isn't sure. So by putting together
the case of Origami Yoda, he must come to a conclusion: is
Yoda for real?

I think that this book was good. I also
think that the author expressed each character
individually. I loved how each case file was written in
first person by different people. I was really captured
by this book. I also think that it should be a series.
This book really makes you want to pick it up and never
put it down.

Buy this book you must, enjoy it you shall!
By Earl
I had originally seen this while walking through a Barnes and Noble and remembered it later (being a Star Wars fan with an 11 year-old daughter). I purchased it for her here on Amazon and she was very excited to read it. Once she finished she insisted I read it as well. I can't tell you how glad I am to have stumbled upon this book - what a FUN read!

The book has a really sharp design throughout - I love the illustrations and all the little details - not only do they capture the characters in the book but there are more than a few funny Star Wars references that fans will delight in. As for the writing and story I was captivated from the moment I picked it up. Having a 6th grader, I can truly say that the author has captured the essence of their unique personalities and place in life so well. While there is some character exaggeration that adds to the frivolity of the book, the heart of the characters all ring true and I could place many of my daughter's friends right in the shoes and voice of many of those characters. I laughed out loud several times reading the book - the humor is so warm and sweet and funny.

This is a great book for anyone with a child around middle school age, or even an adult Star Wars fan looking for a really fun book to add to their collection. Both my daughter and I hope that the author revisits these characters - we can't wait for more adventures of Dwight and his Origami Yoda!

The Non-Library, by Trevor Owen Jones

"I have been forced to become . . . a librarian." ~ Georges Bataille The Non-Library is a non-standard expression for life that is lived without mediation from words, images, or even ideas. While a thing called “the Library” continues to terrorize humanity even as it enters its last stages as a consequence of cataclysmic climate change and late capitalism, the Non-Library is a strictly performative, ahistorical immanence that suspends the Library’s insistent calls to categorization, representation, and reification. Of course, to describe or circumscribe such ineffability has its limits, but it also has its thresholds to cross: with commentary on Derrida’s Archive Fever, a deconstruction of Fichte, a parabiographical meditation on librarianship, and a vamping on the possible “Non-Virgil,” The Non-Library gently proposes a negative capability in liminal spaces in order to best escape and resist the Library’s stranglehold on human knowledge and its requisite social imaginations. "Let us now descend into the blind world . . . ." ~Dante Building on the non-standard thought of Francois Laruelle’s non-philosophy, while not beholden to it, The Non-Library attempts to leave the discourse of the university behind and uses its citations of Badiou, Borges, Bataille, and Dante instead to construct a philo-fiction more akin to the immanence of music and its many expressions rather than Philosophy’s demand that all questions be eventually answered, that the Real is ultimately thinkable, or that all of Life might possibly be contained in the Library.

NON-REVIEW OF “THE NON-LIBRARY“: The Disreduction of Information into Abundance
By Terence Blake
By now we all know that the prefix “non-” does not convey the negation, but rather the extension, the generalisation, and the pluralisation of its root noun, on the model of non-Euclidean geometry. But, while true, this knowledge is merely a preliminary, superficial apprehension. The “non-” does not just add more of the same familiar stuff – it involves the radical defamiliarisation, the “strangification, the estrangement of the domain it operates on. Another way of describing this operation is by means of the concept of “deterritorialisation”, which Deleuze equates with Melville’s notion of “outlandishness” (cf. MOBY-DICK: “But Queequeg, do you see, was a creature in the transition state— neither caterpillar nor butterfly. He was just enough civilized to show off his outlandishness in the strangest possible manner”).

Trevor Owen Jones makes his own contribution to recent discussions about academia and para-academics. Rejecting the habitual terms of the debate as too superficial, he aspires to be a non-academic: “It is the intention of the author to get away from the discourse of the University, permanently” (THE NON-LIBRARY, 1). The book is a get-away car, implying that the author is making off with whatever items of value that he has been able to carry off with him. Bits and pieces of Borges, Badiou, Derrida, Laruelle, Bataille, Deleuze – whatever he can get away with – will be put to other uses elsewhere.

The Non-Library is Erewhon. One may initially aspire to it, or refuse it, as a future or parallel possibility. But the negative capacity (the author talks of “negative capability”, page 6) it embodies is revealed positively when we see that “no”-where is in fact “now-here”. As Deleuze affirms in the Preface to DIFFERENCE AND REPETITION:

Following Samuel Butler, we discover Erewhon, signifying at once the originary ‘nowhere’ and the displaced, disguised, modified and always re-created ‘here-and-now’

The Non-Library is now-here, a here and now under suspension and already estranged. It is thus both mystical and empirical at once. For what is suspended is “the authority of texts over human beings” (78), as embodied in the Principle of Sufficient Information:

The principle of Sufficient Information, which the Library always finds fit to catalog, describe, and circulate, is suspended for the Non-Library (78).

This principle is characterised variously as The Principle of Sufficient Access and Precision (identifying the Totality with the Absolute), or as the Principle of Sufficient Salvation (the pretention to save everything). This Principle of Sufficiency with its will to totality and to total salvation is in fact a principle of indigence and exclusion. Trevor Owen Jones suspends this indigence in favour of a non-principle, that we may call the Non-Principle of Abundance, affirming

that moral explosion prior to content and form’s scission that shows the multiplicity of ‘things’ as they were radically (16).

This movement of dis-reduction, which Carl Jung called “amplication” when applied to the information found by Freudian hermeneutics, was also described by Deleuze in the Preface to DIFFERENCE AND REPETITION:

Empiricism is a mysticism and a mathematicism of concepts, but precisely one which treats the concept as object of an encounter, as a here-and-now, or rather as an Erewhon from which emerge inexhaustibly ever new, differently distributed ‘heres ‘and ‘news‘.

“Getting away” from the discourse of the University is by no means the abandoning of concepts, meaning, and speech. It is the suspension of the academic illusion and of its indigent sufficiency. Not abandonment, but estrangement.

The Little Black Book of Human Resources Management is loaded with lessons not learned in a book. Instead, it is the product of over 20 years of scraped knuckles and attaboys earned while leading HR in public and private organizations. The book shares hard-won advice on what works in a wide range of HR topics, from reductions in force to paying for performance to managing workers compensation to leadership training. But readers will also benefit from experience in the often surprising aspects of HR work that are rarely discussed but are invaluable to success in the role, such as - What all organizations expect from the HR leader, like it or not - The one thing above all else that the company President really wants from the HR leader - How an HR leader can spot the A players and the problem children in the first month on a new job - How to answer the employee who asks if layoffs are coming – and they are Written in a conversational, often humorous style, The Little Black Book of Human Resources Management will shave a few points off the learning curve of anyone looking to advance in the field of human resources management.
