Atom and Eve
I was interested, as a UK author, to review this book as 'ARIA Left Luggage' written by a UK author, and having a similar theme (something altering the human psyche) won a prestigious US award. Sadly, the similarity ends there. The UK author did tedious research into the possibility of his 'problem', an amnesia causing virus, and the credit list is impressive.
Jeff Yager has a writing talent but I feel his debut book has not received the detailed editing needed. The story of a drug to help a mysterious flu (how it differs from ordinary flu is not clear), and its side effects when something extra is added, is the main theme. Knowing US food and drug laws, I cannot see, even given the emergency,it would have been released without intensive testing first when the side effect would have been revealed, and I am sure a respected reviewer would pick up this mistake. There are several examples of the common mistake, 'show, don't tell,'eg 'telling' us about the faulty ingredient and its future effect, and cheques coming regularly to make Mandy rich. Editing faults such as,'Sam walked out of the Donut Shoppe and walked..' A wopper comes near the end. A bullet goes into someone's head. 'His body dropped to the ground, with all signs of life leaving his body.' Wow! It doesn't end there because his body lies motionless on the highway! It is poor editing that can make a book fail

My thoughts:

An excellent debut novel by Jeff Yager, ATOM & EVE is gripping, fast-paced, and will keep you guessing with every turn of the page. The plot is imaginative and daring, and the author provides us with a handful of unforgettable characters. Yager's ability to emphasize the issue of gender roles in this young adult novel is impeccable, and he sheds light on the idea of tampering with the natural world in a science- and technology-driven society. A great read for anyone interested in science fiction, dystopian fiction, and young adult fiction, in general!

This one keeps your attention!

Non-stop action but more appropriate for upper aged teens. This is an interesting story and one that starts jumping from the start and the action does not stop. A pandemic is something we all fear. Those that take shortcuts with our DNA and biochemistry to fight the illness make a great story. However, there are a few things in this story that are a little improbable - but this is fiction. The gender roles and affects on each are presented in an interesting view.

The characters are described well and the story leads you to want to know more about each and how they fit together as they all come from diverse backgrounds. I would have liked to seen more emotion in the characters especially those affected by the violent acts that befall them.

The diverse characters and backstories are pulled together into the main plot at the end. Keeps the reader guessing but sometimes a little confused. The transition could have been smoother and I would like to have seen it drawn out a little more instead of jumping from scene to scene so rapidly.

There are second chances for most characters in this book. A feeling of vendetta rings through in the story line as bullies and infidelity are dealt with. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Politics and economics are described but do not bog down the story line with too many details that would bore a young adult reader.

Overall, a good quick read that keeps the attention.

The second edition of the JDBC API Tutorial and Reference provides a worthwhile tour of the new features in Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) 2.0 and serves well as a reference to Sun's new standard for Java database programming.

Once you open this book, it becomes quickly obvious that it is more comprehensive than the first edition. The new edition begins with an overview of the JDBC API, including its architecture and overall design. Beginners will also be pleased with a short breakdown of the Java programming language and SQL basics.

Early sections of the book walk through an approachable tutorial of JDBC, concentrating on topics such as connecting to databases, retrieving result sets, manipulating records, and handling database transactions. There's also coverage of using stored procedures, including embedded SQL with SQLJ.

The book then turns to new JDBC 2.0 API features, like scrollable cursors, updateable record sets, and batch updates. About the Author

Seth White is a member of the technical staff at Java Software, where he led the design of the JDBC 2.0 API.

Maydene Fisher, a native of San Jose, California, specializes in object-oriented languages. She has experience spanning both coasts of the United States, having documented everything from complex financial models on Wall Street to Java APIs in Silicon Valley.

Dr. Rick Cattell, a Distinguished Engineer at JavaSoft, led the design of the JDBC API. He is currently Chief Architect for the Java Enterprise Technologies group. He was previously responsible for SunSoft's NEO CORBA database integration and the Sun Simplify database GUI. Widely recognized for his contributions to the database field, Dr. Cattell was a cofounder of SQL Access, founder and chair of the Object Database Management Group (ODMG), and author of the first monograph on object database systems as well as more than 40 papers and 3 books.

Dr. Graham Hamilton is a Distinguished Engineer at JavaSoft where he led the design of the JDBC API, the JavaOS™ standalone Java system, and the JavaBeans™ component architecture. He was previously the technical lead for the Spring distributed object-oriented operating system project at Sun, and he has written a variety of papers and patents on operating systems and distributed systems.

Simply the best!

If you look for a good book on JDBC 2.0, this is "the" book. The book is complete, in fact, it covers both jdbc1.0 and 2.0. All topics are explained expertly with style and depth, and in a very accesible way so that beginners can understand. All the codes are clearly written to prove all the main points discussed in the book. This book is the best both for learning jdbc and a reference.
Since not all the features in JDBC2.0 have been adopted by vendors, this book will remain as "the" reference for many years to come.

an exceptionally comprehensive volume

JDBC is one of the most mature and widely used Java APIs. Even after the arrival of more recent tools and technologies like EJB's CMP and JDO, JDBC still remains a simple, fast, and reliable way of storing objects' state in an RDBMS. While conceptually this technology is quite straightforward, its evolution has made it more complex and voluminous. Many books have been trying to explain the main aspects of it over and over again, but the 3rd edition of "JDBC API Tutorial and Reference" goes far beyond that.

The book is divided into two major sections: the Tutorial and the Reference. Actually, there are four tutorials in the Part One: Basic, Advanced, MetaData, and Rowset. Here well-written explanations are followed by clear and detailed examples.

It is remarkable that Part Two, The Reference, is not your typical API reference with simply method signatures or redundant explanations of their arguments. This is an extremely well thought through description of how to use JDBC 3.0 API to achieve a particular goal. Every class has a solid overview, examples, schemas -- everything one needs to get the job done. The book also contains an Appendix for JDBC driver developers and another Appendix covering JDBC 3.0 API changes.

This book provides the most clear and comprehensive JDBC coverage that I have ever seen. It is not just a matter of its size of over 1200 pages, but although the result of a well designed book structure and clear delivery.

A Rare Must-Own Book

I am an artist and entrepreneur who agonized over the planning and budgeting of this business. There was a lot of anxiety... So many questions. I approached the owner of a paint-and-sip business. I told her that I was planning to start an enterprise like hers. She told me, quite flippantly, that it would cost me some fifty thousand dollars to start. I was, however, undeterred. I went onto my kindle, searched, came up on this book: PAINTING MY WAY TO SUCCESS by Anne Ruemler. This is a rare and wonderful woman: She tells EVERYTHING!!! Everything about starting a sip and paint business. Simply, and honestly written. This is a must-own for anyone who wants to start a sip and paint business. (Wish there were more stars I could have given it.)

It would be a good idea to read prior to making a business plan

THE PRAISE

This book is meant to be a very short read. The communication and writing style is clear. It will help you to materialize your thoughts for your business. It would be a good idea to read prior to making a business plan. It greatly helped me with understanding how much my initial supplies will cost for forecasting, how to set-up deal with restaurants owners, and lots of practical tips that I will be using when I start my Paint & Sip business.

THE CRITICISM

This book is not meant to be an in depth explanation or give lots of concrete details for writing your business plan or improving your company. The book comes across as more of a conversation that you would have with a Paint & Sip owner over coffee.

I have a B.S. in Business Management and I took as many Entrepreneurial courses as I could in college. I also ran a marketing/advertising/sales company for a little under 3 years. I feel this book does lack some business acumen. For example, the author mentions that she was a sole proprietorship. I can not think of any reason why a person would not pay the $25 to $100 required in most states to become an LLC and protect oneself legally. She lived in a small town of around 38,000 the marketing methods described in this book would be good, but a lot more would be required when competing in a large metropolitan area. I maybe a little overly critical due to my background. But again this book is meant to be a brief introduction. For that it is very helpful.

This book was very helpful for the information I was seeking. I didn't give the extra start because it was a little light on content.
However, I read through it in about an hour and got most of the information I was looking for.
I would recommend this to other people looking for additional information on the business model. It's worth the money spent and time saved "Googling" more info.

Interesting concept

This is a very interesting concept; a modification of a chart pattern that most trading platforms provide. It seems to help visualize a trend faster and easier than using the standard method; unfortunately, if you don’t know code or can’t program your trading platform, you won’t be able to use it real time.
Working with excel and other hand methods is very tedious and prone to errors. Professionally trading that way is riskier than using a good electronic platform.
I was able to code it into TradeStation and it works amazingly well. However, after backtesting the system I found out it works well during a trending market; during non-trending periods the system will lose money.

Interesting, but useless

To introduce Heikin Ashi Charts is a great idea.
But to use spreadsheets for this and for trading decisions is deeply rooted in the last century.
Any halfway decent online broker has better charting capabilities and tools, usually offered for free.
No need to waste your time with spreadsheet manipulation.
There are better ebooks on Heikin Ashi charts around which show you practical ways how to trade them effectively.

Beautifully simple, unique system

I find the more complex the system (especially with trading) the more problems can arise - the author does a great job of explaining a unique and simple technical system which doesn't try to predict the markets but follows price action - overall achieving around a 50% strike rate but most importantly over the long run each winning trade is on average twice the size of each losing trade making it a profitable and reliable system as these results are shown across a range of markets. Recommended reading.

Something for every level of "financial" knowledge

Fast Profits in Hard Times well worth the money. It highlights ten successful strategies for wealth accumulation that work in rising or falling economic conditions. By wealth accumulation I mean money earned on investments. You still need seed money to start the process, of course.

Everyone knows it's easy to make money on investments when the stock market is bullish. Buy low and sell high. Even the worst mutual fund manager can't help but look like a star under this scenario. But what do you do when the bears come out? How do you generate a healthy return when stocks are dropping? This book helps answer these nagging questions.

The text is less than 250 pages, so it's an easy read. The style of writing is direct; it's like Jordan E. Goodman is sitting across the table from you in a conference room. There are ample call-outs and highlights to make sure you catch and remember the most important points of each of the ten chapters.

My favorite chapters are the ones on high-yield equities, dividend reinvestment programs (DRIPs), bonds and the mysterious foreign exchange. The chapter on stock options is solid, but I think it underemphasizes the risk associated with these leveraged investments. A summary chapter at the end of the book on risk vs. return is something I longed for. Also I found the chapters on tax liens and below-market-value real estate and trusts to be a bit too timely. It seems like everyone is pushing these vehicles nowadays in the foreclosure-rich environment. But make no mistake; the chapters are well-written and chock-full of information.

I'm still chuckling about the chapter on investing in vending machines.

NOT a "Get Rich Quick" Scheme

Nothing is for free, and the advice Goodman doles out proves that you can't get something for nothing. You will need to make a financial investment (albeit with some low upfront options) and you will have to work (research, study, plan, organize, think). However, I thought Goodman did an EXCELLENT job summarizing often complex and "mysterious" financial investment strategies and explaining them so that an interested and alert reader could understand and implement.

I have purchased several investment books, and this is my FAVORITE. I heard about this book on CNN (or was it Fox?) and am glad I purchased it. Don't tell Goodman (or Amazon) but I would have paid several times more for the knowledge "Fast Profits in Hard Times" imparted.

I will definitely be implementing some of Goodman's strategies. Thank you, Mr. Goodman!

Good intro to various investment strategies

This book offers advice on different strategies to make money even in tough times. I think that it could have more details explaining each strategy, but it offers a pretty good introduction. I really like the chapter on tax liens and tax deeds. The author did a really good job explaining the difference between them. Investing in tax liens means paying off a property owner's delinquent tax debt and collecting the interest he or she owes to the municipality. Investing in tax deeds is buying property outright from the municipality that has already foreclosed on the delinquent taxpayer.

One other strategy that I want to point out is Dividend Reinvestment Plans (DRIPs), which involves buying stocks straight from the companies and not paying any brokerage commissions. While the author's arguments are appealing, DRIPs are not as useful as they used to be because commissions have come down dramatically over the years (Scottrade is now $7 per trade).

Overall, this is a good book, and I recommend it to those who are looking to be introduced to different investment strategies.

After forays into the coming-of-age (The Obstacle Course) and PI (House of Smoke) genres, Freedman seems to have settled back, with last year's Key Witness and this new novel, into the sort of rambunctious legal thriller that made his reputation with his debut, Against the Wind. That book has been his high water mark, critically and commercially, and his new novel is unlikely to match it, despite a powerful premise, exciting plotting both in and out of the courtroom and Freedman's usual muscular prose. The opening here is immensely gripping: a teenage girl is apparently kidnapped from her Santa Barbara, Calif., bedroom during a slumber party, her wealthy family deals with the devastation of her disappearance, her body is found and, a year later, a hotshot TV newscaster is arrested for the killing. Freedman handles this sensitive material?obviously inspired by the real-life kidnap-slaying of Polly Klass?freshly and with appropriate gravity. He takes a turn toward the routine, however, when he introduces his hero, attorney Luke Garrison, whose very contrariness?he's a former DA who has fled to the woods in shame over a past failure, who rides a hog and sports a goatee and a ruby stud in his ear?makes him just one more dashing antihero. Luke agrees to defend the newscaster, plunging himself and his hot-blooded girlfriend/assistant into an adrenalized investigation and trial full of false leads, twists and brushes with death, all of which Freedman handles skillfully, other than pointing a blatant finger at the dead girl's father as the real culprit. So the ultimate unmasking of the killer comes as no big surprise, although Freedman's lurid handling of it is surprising?and, some might say, exploitative, as this talented writer turns what begins as a worthy re-imagining of a brutal tragedy into a histrionic page-burner. Freedman (Key Witness, Dutton, 1997) has written another legal thriller, this time chronicling the disappearance and murder of the 14-year-old daughter of a wealthy Santa Barbara family. Luke Garrison is the unbelievable hero, a former district attorney who abandoned the legal system when he found himself a party to injustice. Now Luke has been persuaded to come back and defend the accused murderer. But he finds himself opposing all of his old colleagues, who have mixed emotions about his return. The case is an enigma, too. The facts don't add up, and there's evidence of child sexual abuse and adultery in this prominent family. Luke is able to demonstrate that he's still at the top of his game, and, with a little help from his friends, he solves the case. The novel reads very quickly, although it begins to feel very long and overly dramatic during the trial scenes. For larger collections.

You'll need free time until you're finished, because you won't want to put it down!
This is a great read, a courtroom drama and murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the final scenes unfold.
The backbone of the book is the wonderfully drawn characters, especially Luke and Riva. Luke is the one-time prosecutor defending the man everyone thinks is guilty. His motivations are complex and finely drawn by an author with a gift for emotional details, the kind that make a character stand up off the page and come alive.
The roller-coaster ride plot takes you behind the thin veneer of a rich Santa Barbara family, into the dark corners and locked closets of their lives...the places they want no one to see. Their beautiful, innocent 14-year old daughter has been murdered. But how innocent was she?
Freedman earns high marks as a mystery maestro, a true craftsman of the genre. If you like the well-drawn characters of Richard North Patterson and the courtroom pyrotechnics of early John Grisham, you've gotta read The Disappearance!

THE DISAPPEARNACE is a winner!!

Having been a fan of Mr. Freedman's since AGAINST THE WIND, this book, THE DISAPPEARANCE is easily his best. The author has learned how to keep us guessing and bring in a taut well-written thriller that is chock full of surprises and intense moments!
Luke Garrison left Santa Barbara after a person he prosecuted, who was later to be found innocent, died by the State. Living in Northernmost California, he is living a secluded lifestyle...until an old friend comes up to see him. Seems a prominent family's daughter had been kidnapped and murdered over a year ago and the cops just made an arrest. The community has him convicted already and would Luke like to come back to his old city and defend the alleged??
The story has a bunch of misery and family secrets throughout and Freedman releases details slowly and surely. Once you think you know what's going on...he twists something and you are off on another chase!
Freedman has turned in his best book to date that is tight and easy to follow. The turns in the plot, the characters and the courtroom scenes come alive. A brilliant book! Now I'm going to read ABOVE THE LAW!

BOOK OF THE CENTURY!

The disappearance is a thrilling book that anyone who loves mysteries should read. I have read and I own all of John Grisham's books and I must admit that I thought that no one was better than John Grisham. This book is full of secrets, a lot of bone chilling secrets. You don't find out about them til you are at the end of the book. One would think that you will never know who the real killer is but when you find out you will be absolutely shocked and you will shake your head in disbelief. If you plan to read this book you better have a lot of coffee so you be able to stay up all night. You will absolutely love this book if you love to read mysteries.

This is what a PMP Prep Book Should Be!

After studying Rita Mulcahy's "PMP Exam Prep" book for months, I found myself so frustrated and confused that I started looking for other material. I went online and found the positive reviews of Andy Crowe's "The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try" and bought the book, and I am SO glad I did!

What took months to understand reading the overly-complex RMC book became crystal clear when I read Crowe's book. Crowe organizes his material well, and at the beginning of each chapter he conveniently defines the material's difficulty, memorization level and importance on the exam in terms of "High, Medium or Low". Each page has a tab on the edge that identifies what process you are in, so if you find yourself deep in concentration and suddenly wondering, "Hey am I reading about Quality Assurance or Quality Control?" there's a large indicator right in front of you to help.

On a purely mechanical level, Crowe went out of his way to make sure this book was organized to help you study. I really appreciated that.

The material itself is excellent. As some have pointed out, it is a little slim in some areas, but the book's purpose is to help you pass the exam and in this regard, Crowe admits that he glosses over some items that tend to appear less than others. I recommend you read this book and refer back to the PMBOK and one additional study guide whenever you are confused or need additional detail.

I did find that PTA (Point of Total Assumption) was covered here, where it wasn't covered in the other material I used. I didn't find any major shortcomings in the coverage of the book.

I have read criticisms of the book's grammar and spelling. I did find a few (under 5) spelling errors, but I honestly appreciated the "big print" type and simplistic words. The material covered on the PMP Exam is pretty complex and tough. And too many PMP education providers seem to think they have to mimic that complexity and difficulty to teach the material. It was incredibly refreshing to find a book that actually went out of its way to make the material simple.

The book was also an easy and fast read, unlike all of the other materials I found. I read the first half of the book (up through the end of the "Time" chapter) in one day, and the second half in another day. I then went through the book with a highlighter and re-read it, in 2 days time again, highlighting all the key points. During each of these passes, I took the questions at the end of each chapter. Finally I skimmed the material several times, only glossing over the highlighted points. Doing this I could flip through the entire book in a day. I did that twice. Finally, two days before the exam I took the entire 200 question test at the end of the book, scoring 90%.

The only suggestion I have to improve this book would be to make the exam questions more difficult, so that they more closely mimic the tough, brutal questions I encountered on the PMP exam.

The free material at the Velociteach website was great. I signed up for the online site two weeks prior to sitting for the exam. The online quizzes were good, but limited. The real benefit for me was the classroom slides which presented the material very well. Even though it was mostly a rehash of what was found in the book, it was slightly different material, presented very well, using repetitive images and phrases that really helped key concepts stick in my head. (After going online, I easily memorized word for word the definition of a "Baseline" as they always referred back to the same images and the same words on certain key points. I found this GREAT for learning!)

I took the PMP Exam a few days ago and passed fairly well, thanks completely to Andy Crowe's book. Crowe explains early on in the book how much weight each process group carries on the exam. Calculating my scores in each process group (Initiation, Planning, Executing, M+C, Closing and Professional Responsibility) x the weight each group carries on the exam, I arrived at an estimate of 75% for my score on the overall exam, passing is approximately 61%. My weakest area was in Initiating by the way, which surprised me. Note that I took the final exam in the book shortly before the exam and scored 90%. I would recommend that you get to an 85% or 95% level on this particular book's questions prior to taking the exam.

I am very pleased with my score on the exam and with this book and Velociteach in general. This is my PMP preparation book of choice and I highly recommend it to anyone who is studying for their PMP credential.

Outstanding study aid

I recently passed the PMP exam on the first try. My almost exclusive study aid was Andy's book 'The PMP Exam; How to pass on your first try'.

Andy does an absolutely outstanding job of presenting the material in a very concise and well formatted fashion. He presents the concepts as you would see them in the PMBOK guide and takes the reader through the various processes and knowledge areas that one is required to grasp in order to make it through the exam.

I originally purchased this book based on the outstanding reviews and I have to say it was money well spent. Upon reading some additional reviews, I also elected to purchase Rita's book on the PMP. However, I found her book to be far less effective at conveying information. After spending a few chapters using it, I set it aside and focused back on Andy's book.

I know several users have commented that one needs to purchase and read the PMBOK guide in order to supplement the material in Andy's book. This statement is 100% FALSE. Andy goes into much deeper depth with his prep guide than what was covered in the PMBOK. As someone who spent the time reading the PMBOK, I can easily say that it did not provide any additional insight that was not already covered in excellent detail in Andy's book.

Just as an aside recommendation, I used the following strategy when studying for the exam and it served me well. I will share it with those who might read this review as I think adhering to this study flow will get the information absorbed well:

1) Read Andy's book cover to cover; use a highlighter to mark key points. Do not do the sample questions in your first pass.
2) Go through Andy's book again focusing on the highlights in each chapter. This time, do the sample questions at the end of each chapter.
3) Access the Velociteach website and go through the training. (You get one week of free access with purchase of the book) Go through all the training material and do the sample quizes that come with each section.
4) Do the final exam in Andy's book.

Spend your remaining time reviewing the material and find additional practice questions from external sources if you wish.

As I mentioned, the above strategy worked very well for me and I was able to easily pass the PMP on my first attempt. Not to say that one should take the exam lightly; it is challenging. However, with a solid grasp of the material that is provided in Andy's skillfully written book, you should be confident that you have the tools necessary to achieve a decent grade on the exam; more than enough to pass.

Here's how I passed the PMP on my first try

First, I bought this book. It's basically the PMBOK but easier to read and comprehend. I read it completely in about 3-4 weeks, doing each test at the end of each chapter.

Taking advice from other posts, I augmented my study material with Rita's flashcards and her Fastrack question set. When I started with Rita's material I realized that I couldn't answer quite a few the questions based on what I learned in Andy's book - I was freaking out because my test date was coming up. I did a complete 1-week review of Andy's book and did his final (got an 86), then went back to Rita's practice questions. I scored 76 on her practice PMP test.

As it turned out, my prep from Andy's book served me well in the test. Rita's book certainly has more info (I read some of my friend's copy) and it did help on some test questions but I think it is possible to pass the test just by reading the Crowe book (many have).

One note, if you study Andy's book, you may not be able to answer Rita's Fastrack questions as well as you would like - there are many "Ritaisms" that you have to know - but the actual PMP test is more straightforward. FYI - the Fastrack questions are a great practice aid.

Bottom line is know Andy's book very well and also use some other study aides. Don't sweat it like I did, the test is passable with solid study and practice.
