About the Author
Lee Morrison was born in Southeast London during the latter part of the 1960s to a single parent on a low income. Coming from a rough area and humble beginnings, he learned two things early on: that you have to stand up for yourself and that people treat you the way you let them. He began karate when he was 11 years old, training in various styles for the next seven years, but sought combat proficiency elsewhere after his karate moves failed him during a mugging by two thugs outside a London tube station. Over the years he has trained in Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Filipino weapon systems, wrestling, and Western boxing and combatives, but it was only after he started working as a club doorman that his urban combatives learning curve kicked in. He rapidly realized the need to whittle down his fighting moves to one or two good strikes that worked against all attacks.

although the content is always excellent, are literally falling apart at the seams

As always...down to earth workable concepts and eminently efficient hard skills instruction from Lee Morrison. I have a couple of Lee's older books which, although the content is always excellent, are literally falling apart at the seams. Glad to see he has published his terrific system of self protection through the Paladin Books portal. A much more professional finish. Missed the opportunity to personally train with Lee when I lived in Fareham close to his 'stomping' ground of Southampton a few years ago and am now living abroad, but this book is by far and away, the next best thing. He is without doubt one of the UK premier combatives exponents. This book is an absolute mine of information on the subject presented by a guy who really knows his stuff and can impart it to those who need it the most.

There are some things about Lee Morrison's teaching and writing style that I don't like, but I have to say that this is the best book I have on combatives I have seen. The book is comprehensive - it covers awareness and avoidance, for example, which most books don't. Compare it also with Kelly McCann's book - McCann did not cover knife defense, but Urban Combatives does. Morrison also shows a few combinations of an exercise paired with a combatives technique which can be done to develop stamina.

It's a little weak on grappling, but at least it covers the topic to some small extent. It's also a little weak on blocking.

I don't think you'll find anything here that you haven't seen someplace else. Morrison borrows from Geoff Thompson, Kelly McCann, and others. He even borrows from Jack Dempsey. In the book, he acknowledges that some of this was developed by other people. I think the way he borrows from others is a good thing - I think he has assembled the most complete package of combatives in any book.

Finally, I don't think I found a single technique, or a single passage of text, that I thought was stupid or invalid. In a lot of systems you'll find some good stuff but also some stuff that is dangerous for you to try. I did not find anything like that in this book - I thought everything was a tool that would be useful.

Currently the best book on reality based self protection available.

While a lot of martial arts and combat sports claim to teach self defense, what they are really teaching is either fighting - or more specifically duelling, in which to people with the same martial arts background is trying to best eachother with the same techniques and with a sporting mindset -, or they are teaching wholly unrealistic step by step responses to predefined attacks. The approach Lee takes to self defense, or self-protection as he prefers to term it, is based on the premises that you cannot know exactly who will attack you, how many attackers there will be, their background, or how they will attack you. Based on his real life experience(often hardbought) as a doorman for over a decade in several of UK's most dangerous areas, as well as the accumulated knowledge passed on by RBSP-greats such as Kelly McCann, Geoff Thompson, Charles Nelson and several others, Lee's gives you a complete gameplan from the moment you become aware of something fishy going on (and Lee gives very good instruction on situational awareness in this book), to the moment the dust settles, and your attacker is either unconsious on the floor, or you have successfully escaped a dangerous situation. All of the techniques thaught in this book is based on the principles of gross motor and simple mechanics, and can best be described as no-nonesense, well tested, and highly functional.

Having briefly trained with Lee Morrison at a seminar in 2011, I can attest to not only his ability to use the methods he teaches against resisting opponents, but also to how easy these methods are to learn and implement in ones personal self protection gameplan.

The book is very clearly written, has clear photographs(although, I wish they were color instead of B/W), and good advice all over. Highly recommended to anyone taking the security of themselves and their loved ones seriously.

The pilots called themselves the 'Tokyo Club'. It was a simple task to become a member. If your gas held out and you were not blown off-course on your return trip, you landed back at 'Iwo' after an eight-hour flight. Do it once and you earned membership in the club. Do it 15 times and you earned a trip home. But make one mistake or have one touch of bad luck, and you had a very good chance of ending up dead.
This book will tell the little-known story of these brave men and their efforts to defeat the aerial forces defending Japan during the final five months of World War 2. Used initially to provide fighter escort for B-29s bombing Tokyo and other Japanese cities, the Iwo Jima-based P-51s enjoyed such success that they were soon called on to make low-level attacks against ground targets in preparation for the invasion of Japan.
The book will cover the three Mustang-equipped Very Long Range fighter groups of the USAAF's Seventh Fighter Command - the 15th, 21st and 506th FGs - based on Iwo Jima with an action-packed text, many rare photos drawn from private collections and appendices providing statistical information. These units flew some of the most colourful P-51s ever seen in USAAF, and the author has extensive photographic references available to allow Jim Laurier to produce profile illustrations of 30 P-51D/Ks in their finery.

The Story of Arduous Long-Range Missions over Japan!

The P-51 and P-47 pilots who flew VLR missions to Japan in 1945 must have had cojones of steel! Imagine flying 650 miles in a single-engine fighter over the unforgiving Pacific Ocean, battling hordes of Japanese interceptors over the Homeland and then making the return trip, all the while hoping that wonderful Merlin engine upfront wouldn't miss a beat! The story of those epic - and butt-busting - missions is well told in this Osprey volume, #25 in their 'Aviation Elite Units' series.

Award-winning author Carl Molesworth chronicles the VLR missions flown by the pilots of the 15th, 21st and 506th Fighter Groups of the 7th Fighter Command starting in April 1945. The initial escort missions were fiercely opposed by IJNAF and IJAAF interceptors; later missions, less so due to the Japanese decision to conserve their resources to combat the expected U.S. invasion of the Homeland. But when the Japanese refused to come up to fight, the P-51s just went down on the deck, strafing Japanese targets at will.

By war's end, the P-51 pilots had scored 452 air and ground kills at a cost of 121 KIAs or POWs. Because of the sporadic nature of the air combat, few pilots scored the magic five kills to make ace. Nevertheless, these missions required an extraordinary physical and mental effort from the pilots involved and Molesworth's book stands as a tribute to those indomitable airmen.

As with other Osprey titles, this one is illustrated with over 100 photographs. The book benefits however from eight pages of absolutely gorgeous color side-views by Jim Laurier. Laurier's work is top-of-the-line; his artwork is so sharp you can even count the rivets.

Carl Molesworth's VERY LONG RANGE P-51 MUSTANG UNITS OF THE PACIFIC WAR provides a riveting combat history joining others in the 'Aviation Elite Units' series; this focusing on the pilots who called themselves the 'Tokyo Club', and who flew through monsoons and more to attack a heavily defended target at the heart of Japan's capitol. Black and white and some color photos liberally embellish the battle and technical descriptions.

A typical fine, but incomplete Osprey volume.

I love the Osprey titles, and own quite a few. Often they are the only books I can find on certain subjects relative to WW2 Warbirds. This volume in one such example.

The P-51 is an icon of the air war in Europe, and fought in the CBI and Pacific as well, but these stories are not nearly as easy to find as the myriad books and articles about the ETO and MTO. This volume tells us about the P-51s that fought, for months, over Japan.

What is missing for the most part is the technical discussions that Warbird nuts live and breathe. For example, the Merlin engines of the D model Mustangs based on Iwo Jima were cleared, as far as we know, for operations with 145 octane fuel, alowing much higher manifold pressures to be obtained than any other P-51s flown by US forces. This gave them better acceleration, better climb and faster speeds at low and medium altitudes, keeping their performance advantages over contemporary A/C on both sides of the War. Combined with G-Suits and lead computing gunsights, these Mustangs were far more formidable aircraft than the P-51B models flown operationally in the ETO beginning in December 1943.

Indeed, the familiar practice of comparing late mark WW2 planes, like the F4U-4 to the 1943 Mustangs is often seen, but ultimately unfair to the P-51's operating at 80 inches of HG manifold pressure. I would have LOVED to hear some stories, seen some data about this.

Other than that, it is a fine, informative book, and highly recommended.

The Spiritual Path of Surat Shabd

"The Philosophy of the Masters" is a compelling book which was written by a realized Master, Sawan Singh. The book describes the spiritual practice of Surat Shabd of Sant Mat which is purported to be the highest spiritual science. The focus of this spiritual practice is to attune oneself to the spiritual current of the sound and light of "God" which is Shabd, or the outward manifestation of "God". It should be noted that the practice of Surat Shabd can only be accomplished through one's initiation and direction of a Living Master or Teacher. This is the rub. One cannot practice Surat Shabd based on one's own faith by worshiping a non-living Master or Religious Icon. Where and how one finds a Living Master seems to be a near impossible task and a real frustration let alone if one is spiritually ready for such a Master. How does one really know that a particular Master is the embodiment of "God" or if one is being led in the wrong direction?
Although this is a very provocative and compelling book which raises very cogent points about the practice of Surat Shabd, it would appear not to be the most practical spiritual path to pursue.

Hamidreza Sattari started software development in 2002. He has been involved in several areas of Software Engineering--programming to architecture to management. His area of interest has been integration among enterprise applications and SOA. Hamidreza Sattari earned his MSc in Software Engineering in 2008 from Herriot Watt University, UK and his Bachelor's Degree in 1994 in Electrical Engineering (Electronics) from Tehran Azad University, Iran. In recent years his research area of interest has been scientific data mining, using algorithms and statistical techniques in pattern recognition, estimation and machine learning. Shameer Kunjumohamed is a software architect, specialized in enterprise application integrations and SOA. He is well versed in J2EE and Microsoft.Net platforms. He is interested in various mobile platforms including Android, Black berry and other cross-platform mobile frameworks these days. After graduating from Calicut University, India in 2000, Shameer handled different roles in software engineering. He graduated his Masters Degree in Software Engineering from Herriot Watt University, UK from Dubai International Academic City in 2009. At present he works as a Solutions Architect in Dubai, UAE, and is a guest lecturer in the same university for the Masters students in Information Technology.

It's a port in a storm, but not one that you'd anchor at otherwise

As others have already mentioned, there is an utter dearth of documentation out there about Spring Web Services, a technology which, in my opinion, should be a very rich environment for documentation and texts. As such, this book gets an extra star for simply existing.

The problem with this book is that there are too many things which are just plain missing. For starters, while there aren't errors of gross negligence (it was clearly run through a spellchecker so that there aren't blatantly misspelled words), there are sentences which are incomplete and that makes the material hard to comprehend.

However, to me, the bigger issue is that the "recipes" which are included seem to be missing instructions. Not the kind of omissions like forgetting to include the eggs in a recipe for brownies, more like failing to mention that you need to grease the pan first. Put another way, it's as if the authors have made the assumption that any developer using this reference will automatically infer the items that have failed to be documented.

Purchase the book and use, but beware that it might not offer the quick start that you have come to expect from other reference books on the market today.

Best material available outside of Spring documentation

While the Spring documentation is as usual of high quality, it does not help much in practical examples. This book fills that gap. While some of the English syntax is awkward to follow and the structure of the pages are difficult to follow, it is a very small negative compared to the rest of the book. The authors clearly have a clear understanding of what they are talking about. The sample code works fine which is a delight. Coverage of different security libraries is important and done very well. Also, the graded approach to using Spring Web Services is very useful. It helped me understand when to use, what and where. The use of interceptors is explained very well.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to use the power of Spring Web Services.

A good supplement to the anemic online reference documentation

This book does assume a certain amount of foreknowledge of Spring and JEE in general, but since it's a cookbook and not a book intended to explain in detail, it works quite well.
As one of the reviewers above observed, it would have been nice to have this book when I was starting out with Spring WS. The writing style is clean and no nonsense and it clearly outlines all of the prerequisites for each recipe. It typically provides all of the maven dependencies required for each recipe, a practice that is becoming more popular with the various online resources.
If you're looking for some quick reference card style instructions for building or consuming web services, this book goes quite a long way toward fulfilling your needs.

So many things to love about this

A page-turning mystery full of family secrets, awkward relatives, believable romance and great humour. Protagonists were real but delightful (a big relief as I'm so sick of reading about characters I can't even like), and I foresee myself re-reading this often. I wish I could go in greater depth on the many nuanced things I appreciated about reading this but it would be full of spoilers - basically, a great, fun read worth much more than what it cost me

Fantastic, fun read!

Fun, light hearted mystery with a great cast of characters. The main character, Jay, is totally relatable and her Aunt Mimi is a trip. Her girlfriend Nicole is interesting and a little complex, like most women, but serves as a good foil for Jay. Their relationship is sexy and fun and they are really great together. And the mystery is great, too! I didn't have the killer figured out by the end so it was a surprise. I'm a big fan of Rae's work and this one definitely did not disappoint!
