Black Sun: Aryan Cults, Esoteric Nazism, and the Politics of Identity, by Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke

More than half a century after the defeat of Nazism and fascism, the far right is again challenging the liberal order of Western democracies. Radical movements are feeding on anxiety about economic globalization, affirmative action, and third-world immigration, flashpoint issues to many traditional groups in multicultural societies. A curious mixture of Aristocratic paganism, anti-Semitic demonology, Eastern philosophies and the occult is influencing populist antigovernment sentiment and helping to exploit the widespread fear that invisible elites are shaping world events.

Black Sun examines the new neofascist ideology, showing how hate groups, militias and conspiracy cults attempt to gain influence. Based on interviews and extensive research into underground groups, Black Sun documents the new Nazi and fascist sects that have sprung up from the 1970s through the 1990s and examines the mentality and motivation of these far-right extremists. The result is a detailed, grounded portrait of the mythical and devotional aspects of Hitler cults among Aryan mystics, racist skinheads and Nazi satanists, Heavy Metal music fans, and in occult literature.

Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke offers a unique perspective on far right neo-Nazism viewing it as a new form of Western religious heresy. He paints a frightening picture of a religion with its own relics, rituals, prophecies and an international sectarian following that could, under the proper conditions, gain political power and attempt to realize its dangerous millenarian fantasies.

From Publishers Weekly
This comprehensive inquiry examines the disturbing historical and contemporary connections between certain religious cults and Nazi ideology. Goodrick-Clarke (Hitler's Priestess; The Occult Roots of Nazism) begins with a consideration of the origins of American neo-Nazism and ends with a thorough discussion of well-known, current far-right groups: the European skinheads, the Aryan Nations and the World Church of the Creator movement, which inspired the 1999 shooting spree in the Midwest. In between, the author focuses on the intersection between Nazi ideology and religious and cultural oddities, showing, for example, how some Nazi leaders, particularly Heinrich Himmler, were obsessed with esoterica and strange historical justifications for pro-Aryan racial theory. Over the past 75 years, Nazi ideology has been mixed with Hinduism, magic, alchemy and the occult as a rebellion against the status quo. In Nazi Satanism, "the swastika and Third Reich imagery join black candles, skulls and magical pentagrams in a tableau of ritualized transgression." And during the post-WWII era, many fascists saw UFO sightings as an indication that Nazis would come back to rule the world. Throughout, Goodrick-Clarke catalogues the ideologies, histories, personalities and appeals of the groups, most of which have always found young white men to be their most receptive audience. There's little evaluation of the potential that the small, splinter groups now active might have to commit future atrocities, but the author adds to our knowledge of the broad, frightening tentacles of Nazi ideology. From Library Journal
Goodrick-Clarke's The Occult Roots of Nazism examined the influence of late 19th- and early 20th-century German and pagan mysticism on National Socialist thought. This sequel, based on the writings of past and contemporary adherents of these ideas, continues this study among modern American and European racist groups. The new angle is the glorification of Hitler and Nazism. Goodrick-Clarke shows how a strange mix of racism, paganism, Eastern religion, Christianity, Satanism, rock music, and science fiction is being used to support the revival of fascist ideas; adherents see Hitler himself as an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu who survived World War II at a secret German flying-saucer base located in Antarctica. This disturbing work presents a troubling picture of the mindset of the modern Far Right. For all libraries. Stephen L. Hupp, West Virginia Univ.

Review

“Anyone who remembers the devastation wrought by Nazi fanaticism can only be astonished and dismayed by this book. Who could have foreseen that half a century after the defeat of the Third Reich the Jews would once again be perceived as a demonic power intent on destroying the ‘Aryan race’, or that Hitler would be imagined as a divine being who is about to return to earth to complete the Holocaust? For the matter, who could have foreseen that the preposterous ‘pagan’ cult developed by Heinrich Himmler would ever be revived? Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke shows not only that these things have indeed happened but how and why they have happened. He also suggests what dangers they may portend. Black Sun is both an enthralling and a deeply disturbing work. It deserves the most serious attention and a wide readership.”
-Norman Cohn, author of The Pursuit of the Millennium and Warrant for Genocide

“[An] important work.”
-Philadelphia Inquirer

“Presents a troubling picture of the mindset of the modern Far Right.”
-Library Journal

“Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke has done pioneering work in the field of the occult roots of Nazism. In the present volume he performs the same invaluable service with regard to the ideological fantasies of post war neofascism.”
-Walter Laqueur

“Excellent book provides a lucid and often chilling guide.”
-Journal of European Studies

A Disappointing Look At NeoNazism.
By New Age of Barbarism
In this book, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke tries to give an account of the continuation of much of the Nazi philosophy after the demise of the Third Reich. However, after his previous work _The Occult Roots of Nazism_ this book is surely a large disappointment. The book presents chapters on the American NeoNazis (especially Rockwell), British Nazis (including Colin Jordan and "Combat 18"), Julius Evola, Francis Parker Yockey and James Madole, Savitri Devi, a collection of "mysterious" and occult phenomena surrounding the Third Reich, Wilhelm Landig, UFOs and Antarctic underground bases, Miguel Serrano, black metal, Nazi Satanism, Christian Identity, Nordic paganism, and conspiracy beliefs regarding the New World Order. Unfortunately, there is very little holding this book together and it is rather poorly written. Although the book is entertaining, some of the weirdest things you are likely to read about, it fails to achieve any sort of conclusion at all and resorts to gratuitous references to terrorism (the events of September 11, unconnected with Nazism at all).
For a much better account of NeoNazi and far right beliefs read either: _Arktos_ by Joscelyn Godwin or _Dreamer of the Day_ by Kevin Coogan.

A good read
By J. Colo
The book keeps your attention going, exploring both things that most people interested in the topic already knew, and also material that was not known. Very interesting indeed.

Better than most, despite its flaws
By Jay Kinney
Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke has written two outstanding books on Nazism and its links to religious/occult philosophies and figures: "The Occult Roots of Nazism" and "Hitler's Priestess." In both of those previous books (the first based on his doctoral dissertation at Oxford), he engaged in prodigious original source research and showed a bright light on subjects that had previously received either little attention or sloppy sensationalistic treatment.
If "Black Sun" is a trifle disappointing, it is so only by comparision with his own earlier achievements. This latest work is much more journalistic and relies, unfortunately, on others' research more often than not. Moreover, Goodrick-Clarke, in attempting a survey of current aryan/Neo-Nazi/Satanic/far right groups and writings, ends up covering ground already covered in books like Joscelyn Godwin's "Arktos," Kevin Coogan's "Dreamer of the Day," and his own "Hitler's Priestess" (which is about Savitri Devi, who combined Hinduism and Hitlerism).
It is not as if Goodrick-Clarke didn't spend his time in the trenches: it appears that he engaged in extensive correspondence with a number of his subjects and, as always, he has obviously read and digested much of the material that he summarizes in a clear-cut fashion. His chapter on Miguel Serrano breaks new ground in reporting on the extent of that author/diplomat's eccentric Hitler worship. But on other figures of the neo-nazi fringe, such as David Myatt, one is left with the impression that Goodrick-Clarke may have given too much credence to their own self-presentation or, conversely, to the hyperbole of their critics.
Make no mistake, this is as good a summary of present neo-nazi, extreme right ideas and personae as one is likely to find, but in dealing with the current scene - in a book that was written over the course of nearly a decade - "Black Sun" falls prey to the criticism, (voiced in some other reviews here,) that it is not entirely accurate or up to date. Especially in dealing with the knotty and ambiguous area of neo-nazi and Satanic overlaps, Goodrick-Clarke would have benefitted from inside information which was apparently beyond his grasp.
Still, it is never quite cricket to criticize a book for what a critic thinks it should be or might have been. There is much information here that cannot be found anywhere else, and with the caveat that one should double check any facts that may have been superceded by subsequent events, "Black Sun" is a compelling read.

Gritty, Real, Great! That from a white girl...
By M. J Pronio
This is my third Terry McMillan novel and once again, I am a huge fan. Her books are REAL, lively, and full of life's lessons and hurts. And although I am white, this family story resonates in my head as my own.
Mama, the mother of five, is a struggling black woman who's lived in near poverty her entire life. She is strong, opinionated, bossy, with a grit that only comes from living life the hard way, but also has the character to 'want a back yard', shine the windows and keep her babies polite, hard workers and knowin' they got some good in this life. All of that while she put up with thier Daddy, a boozer and abuser, who Mildred (Mama) finally cuts loose.
The story goes on for a couple of decades, with each of her babies lives opening like a flower. All the while, Mildred is growing and then wilting, on and on...
This story is real! NO family has happy or unhappy endings. We are all on a journey that doesn't stop... and Terry McMillan knows how to display this more than any other modern writer I've experienced!
Awesome, excellent, terrific!!

Another fine book from Ms. McMillan
By A Customer
I have enjoyed reading Terry McMillan's books from the moment I picked up "Waiting to Exhale" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back." I love Ms. McMillians sassiness in her characters and her straight forward, in your face approach.
This book was another hit as far as I am concerned. It was another page turner that I could not put down. I may not have like the characters personally, such as Mama, she needed a swift kicked in the butt. I found her to be very selfish and cold. She whinned to much for me and I would not have given her my forwarding address if I were one of her children. She was a horrible example for her children in a lot of ways. God's hands were helping these children survive and thrive in a desolate place.
Terry, thanks for writing this story. I love your style and wish you continued success. I am looking forward to reading your next book.

The comments on the outside of the book with all of the quotes praising the work were well-justified. Although almost ten years old the book still goes straight to the heart of the key issues in the field of human-computer interaction.

Assistive Technology in the Classroom: Enhancing the School Experiences of Students with Disabilities (2nd Edition), by Amy G. Dell, Debor

A current look at the most effective uses of assistive technology for students with disabilities that emphasizes the link between technology and learning.

This updated text focuses on the use of assistive technology to increase the independence and participation of students with disabilities in schools by providing them with access to the curriculum.  With an emphasis on both the relationship between assistive technology and learning and on how assistive technology can be integrated into the curriculum, this text assesses the school-related tasks that students with special needs must perform in order to be successful. Additionally, this text provides descriptions of technology-based solutions, presenting these obstacles in clear, engaging prose. Instead of approaching this topic through disability categories, this book recognizes that each child is unique and that there are multiple factors to examine before choosing technology tools for each student. Throughout the book, assistive technology tools are not discussed in isolation — the context for technology use is always the classroom, the teaching-learning process, and its impact on students with disabilities.

The second edition of Assistive Technology in the Classroom Enhancing the School Experiences of Students with Disabilities,  clearly understands and addresses two of the most important aspects of assistive technology: that classroom technology changes rapidly, and that individual students with disabilities require personalized solutions when it comes to successfully completing daily, school-related tasks. With the first aspect in mind, the authors of this contemporary and engaging text have created a companion website that will keep students and instructors up to date with the most current advancements in assistive technology, research, website links, and other resources. With the second aspect in mind, the authors have approached assistive technology with a focus on finding assistive technology tools that speak to individual students, not disability categories.

This text also comes filled with learning tools to help readers process and retain what they are learning effectively: each chapter begins with a set of Focus Questions to guide the reader, and concludes with a bulleted summary, a list of related Websites, and Suggested Activities for use in the classroom or as out-of-class assignments.

·        Current information on all technology tools, including software, Web-based activities, Website addresses, has been updated to reflect current products and trends, allowing students to find and use every technology resource included in the text.

·        New material on providing books in alternate formats to students with print disabilities, including the new requirement in the 2004 IDEA to provide all students with Accessible Instructional Materials.

·        Accessibility features in Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6 have been added so that students are familiar with the most current and popular operating systems in use.

PRACTICE MEETS THEORY!!
By Allison K.
Too many times in graduate study, we are inundated with theory that has no real practical use. Enter this text! It is a new addition to my graduate program, and it provides practical information about assistive technology, low-tech to high-tech, that can be easily incorporated into any classroom. It describes products, explains use, describes disabilities that can be helped, and even gives vendor information!

This product is a "must have" for any special educator!

Review
“I love this book. It helps people to truly walk in someone else’s footprints. This guide will show beginning teachers and other professionals how to build successful relationships with their students' parents.”
(Natalie Marston, Principal 2011-10-21)

"If parents and professionals could wear out their shoes by dancing the way Fialka, Feldman, and Mikus describe it in this book, the shoes would indeed be worth pressing against one’s heart. Through stories, the authors expertly choreograph the steps families, professionals, and the children must take to foster this essential relationship―like a waltz: one, two, three." (Robin McWilliam, Director, Center for Child and Family Research 2011-10-21)

"This book beautifully reminds us that social change happens through listening, dialogue, and engagement. Beneath our roles as professionals and parents, these authors gently help us to remember that 'we are all people first,' and through empathy we can find ways to sidestep―or dance― around many of the missteps that lead to misunderstanding and conflict. This book is a wonderful resource for anyone trying to navigate the complexities of supporting and advocating for disabled students in inclusive classrooms." (Emma Van der Klift and Norman Kunc, Co- directors 2011-11-03)

“A mother who found her calling through fate or accident―and never looked away or glanced back―Janice Fialka is internationally renowned for her relentless, never-say-never advocacy. She and her coauthors offer hope and wisdom for parents who would see more clearly into the lives of their children―disabled or not―and for every professional who would engage them.” (Bill Ayers, Author, To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher and A Kind and Just Parent 2011-12-19)

“Rarely does a book hold such promise for promoting genuine partnerships between families of children with disabilities and the professionals who participate in their care. The real-life passages from the authors, seasoned parents, and experienced professionals infuse this work with unparalleled authenticity.” (Susan Addison, Special Educator, Retired 2011-12-19)

“The authors get right to the heart of parent-professional relationships. They deconstruct and reconstruct the difficult process of examining how parents and professionals communicate. The stories used to illustrate specific points are superb. We need this thoughtful and provoking perspective to encourage us to listen more closely to one another for the benefit our children.” (Martha E. Mock, Assistant Professor 2011-12-19)

“This book accomplishes two impressive feats. First: it conveys, through information and examples, research-based practices for building family-professional partnerships. Second: the clear, storytelling style of writing makes it impossible to put down. This is a must for anyone whose responsibilities involve working with the families of children with disabilities.” (Pamela J. Winton, Senior Scientist and Director of Outreach 2011-12-19)

“The authors powerfully illustrate the ‘dance of partnership’ in complex and nuanced ways. They capture how things are in the real world of relationships between parents and professionals. The stories are moving, the perspectives insightful, and practical strategies and suggestions abound. I recommend this book as a superb source of guidance and support.” (Shari Saunders, Clinical Associate Professor 2011-12-19)

“This is a book written with a quality that is both honest and sensitive. The authors force us to put aside all other issues, reminding us what is real and essential in our pursuit of genuine student learning.” (Georgina M. Terrigno, Speech and Language Pathologist 2011-12-19)

“Having attended many challenging problem-solving meetings, I know how important it is for families and professionals to keep open hearts and minds. This unique resource moves beyond the ‘how to’s’ of effective communication and reminds us of the values that are central to any great team―generosity, creativity, and a willingness to learn from one another.” (Paula Kluth, Consultant & Author, You’re Going to Love This Kid: Teaching Students with Autism in the Inclusive Classroom 2011-12-19)

“The authors capture the range of family and provider experiences, communication styles, and strategies that create effective partnerships. This book is a critically important read for families, providers, and especially for preservice students entering professions in which they will work with children and families.” (Beth Swedeen, Parent and Executive Director 2011-12-20)

“As I read this book, I realized that I kept switching back and forth from my ‘professional’ hat to my ‘parent’ hat. Helping us to switch hats is the real power of this work. The personal stories highlight well-documented themes in the literature on parent and professional perspectives. The strategies are practical and effective. This is a text I will revisit often.” (Dr. Julie Ricks-Doneen, Director, Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education 2011-12-20)

“This is a wonderful reference book to help parent and professionals ‘dance the dance’ together and avoid any missteps. The authors help readers understand the underlying thoughts of both the parent and the professional when they meet to set up a program. This is a sure read for both parents and education professionals.” (Filomena Bernatowicz, Teacher and member, Committee on Preschool Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors waltz us through steps to develop effective parent-professional partnerships using dance as a metaphor. When practiced by all participants in the dance, the result is mutual understanding and respect: the core of collaborative relationships. Theirs is a fresh approach to a much-discussed subject―a delightful invitation to dance.” (Elizabeth W. Bauer, Consultant 2011-12-20)

“In my 15 years of teaching, I have not come across a book that so eloquently describes the sensitive relationship between schools and parents as they navigate through the special education process. Using dancing as a metaphor for this delicate relationship, the authors provide an easy-to-read manual that perfectly compliments a college class or professional book study.” (Jennifer Grieco, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“This book’s valuable information and insights make it a ‘must read’ for everyone involved in the special education process. I will refer to this book frequently as it reminds me of the often unsaid feelings and concerns of parents. The authors provide numerous useful approaches so that all parties can collaborate and do what is best for the child.” (Jacqueline Rau, Fifth-Grade Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“Brilliantly written from the differing vantage points of both parents and professionals, this book shows how perceptions and assumptions can be falsely formed between ‘opponents.’ Use this knowledge to develop the strong partnerships necessary for parents and professionals to collaborate and support the needs of students!" (Kathy Brill, Board Member 2011-12-20)

“So often in special education, the people involved share the same goal, yet envision a different path to achieve that goal. The authors remind us that our ultimate goal is the same. They show us how, even in the most difficult situations, we can ‘dance’ together in successful collaboration.” (Tara Rounds, School Psychologist, CSE/CPSE Chairperson 2011-12-20)

“This book offers important suggestions for finding a way to dance together, reminding us exactly why we are dancing―for the child. I strongly recommend this text to parents and professionals. The real-life examples will help all parties understand and empathize with each other, making it that much easier to dance together.” (Jo Spahr, Parent of a special needs child, and IEP committee member 2011-12-20)

“The parent-professional relationship can be awkward, so using the metaphor of learning to dance together to benefit children is apt. With the resources to help children shrinking, it is more vital than ever for parents and professionals to forge strong partnerships. This perspective can really help―highly recommended.” (Robert A. Naseef, Author of Special Children, Challenged Parents 2011-12-20)

“The authors have done the near impossible―they have described the process of partnership in a way that is both easily accessible and incredibly nuanced. They provide a developmental roadmap and the concrete tools we need to make partnerships work. In this book, I have finally found the resource I need.” (Ethan Lowenstein, Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction 2011-12-20)

“The approach of this book is fresh, current and multifaceted without being complicated. The authors have skillfully woven multiple and complex family and professional perspectives into a well-integrated whole that is thoughtful, clear, and explicit. The material is relevant, useful, and extraordinarily helpful to a wide variety of dance partners.” (Camille Catlett, Scientist 2011-12-20)

“This book comes from the heart of an author who knows both sides. The content is relevant, immediately useful, and encourages us to think deeply about ourselves and how we can apply the information to make a difference―all evidence-based components of effective adult learning.” (Juliann Woods, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors never forget that it is all about the children/students with disabilities―so the adults just need to figure it out! They include many subtle examples of how inclusion can work throughout the book. An important take-away message is that becoming true partners takes time and is a process.” (Peggy A. Gallagher, Professor of Early Childhood Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors help readers understand that relationships are about human needs and feelings and that partnerships only develop to their potential when each party can both share and listen to content and facts as well as the needs and feelings of the other. This book is destined to be a classic. Give it to someone you care about; and read it yourself reflectively.” (Michael Peterson, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors of this book offer a welcomed, kind and needed message for both professionals and parents: slow the pace, stop and listen. The authors know we build each partnership one at a time. This is a message we desperately need to get into higher education and professional development communities.” (Mary Jane Brotherson, Professor, Department of Human Development and Family Studies 2011-12-20)

“This book reminds teachers and professionals to include parents in the timeline of the special education process. The information that parents contribute and different perspective they provide can help us understand the whole child. As I finished this book, I developed a more open perspective to working with parents.” (Maura Crown, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“I will use this book as a key text in my courses that include the topics of collaborative teaching, home-school partnerships, and conflict mediation. What a great book for modeling for new teachers the realities of collaboration in the IEP process and the best practices that make the process a joyful dance rather than a difficult experience.” (Jacqueline Thousand, Professor 2011-12-20)

“Using understandable, jargon-free language, the authors help professionals and parents understand each others’ viewpoints. The text also provides practical tips and suggestions about how to work together collaboratively. I highly recommend this book for novice and veteran parents and professionals.” (Stephanie Smith Lee, Former Director, Office of Special Education Programs 2011-12-20)

“I found myself nodding in agreement with virtually all the points made in this book. The process is, indeed, a dance. Although one would think we have mastered dancing, each student, each family, each day brings forth a new dance. As partners and parents we need to tweak out that uniqueness in the child together.” (Jo-Anne Dobbins, Director of Pupil Personnel Services 2011-12-20)

“This book serves as a vital resource and provides essential viewpoints for professionals. The text also reminds parents how valuable their input is to the process. In the spirit of collaboration, we highly recommend this book.” (Tiiu Presutti, Special Education Teacher, Melinda Sulzbach, School Social Worker & Adrienne Hershfield, School Psychologist 2011-12-20)

Beautiful.
By Lee Ann Jung
It can be easy for professionals in special education to become lost in the sea of acronyms, legalese, and seemingly endless prescribed procedures for special education services. Fialka and her coauthors move us far beyond these procedural elements to refocus our attention on people and relationships. They offer brilliant guidance for navigating relationships as families and providers work together to support children. This will be required reading in my course on families in the future.

Working together for a special needs child
By Barbara Laird
I recommend this book to anyone faced with an IEP, or any situation where you need to understand and be understood to come to an agreement. The book deals with two parties who have the best interests of a special needs child, but come with different ideas on the best solution. Fialka and Feldman present many ideas, illustrated with interesting stories, on how to make the process go from awkward missteps to smoother dancing.

A must for Parents and Professional who believe in inclusion, democracy and the potential of all students
By Rich Feldman
For decades too many progressives educators and social justice activists have "forgotten" our children with disabilities. "Partnering for Children with Disabilities: A Dance that Matters" helps us listen to each other and learn from each other so a new vision of education emerges that respects the potential of all our children. This book will help all parents and professionals to listen, learn and create meaningful dialogue that will support our children who have disabilities.
