Good Cop, Bad Cop: Racial Profiling and Competing Views of Justice (Studies in Crime and Punishment), by Milton Heumann, Lance Cassak

Good Cop, Bad Cop looks at the rise of racial profiling, one of the most important and hotly debated topics in criminal justice, and traces its development from its origins in criminal profiling, through the use of profiles in drug trafficking prevention efforts in airports and on the U.S. highways, until it became synonymous with racial discrimination by law enforcement. The authors draw upon an extensive body of primary sources, social science literature, and court cases to examine how law enforcement, legislators, and the courts have handled racial profiling. They also review the debate over racial profiling, offering arguments made by its opponents and defenders before and after the events of September 11 and describe its development as both a legal and a cultural concept.

Review
‘Profiling’ can be a psychiatrist’s prediction that a serial bomber will prove to be heavy-set, single, middle-aged, foreign-born, and Roman Catholic. It can be a federal task force’s identification of 25 to 30 characteristics shared by many airplane hijackers but not by most members of the public. It can be a federal drug agent’s personal, constantly changing list of characteristics supposedly indicative of drug trafficking. It can be the practice of making traffic arrests of blacks and Latinos more often than whites because highway patrol officers believe that blacks and Latinos are more likely to be drug couriers. It can be a list of the characteristics of the bank accounts used to finance past terrorist activities. It can even be any law enforcement action a critic wants to call racially biased. In ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop’, Milton Heumann and Lance Cassak examine these uses of the chameleon-like concept, tracing how one use has led to another. The result is an original, important, readable, engaging, and thought-provoking study. (Albert W. Alschuler, Julius Kreeger Professor of Law and Criminology, University of Chicago School of Law)

This box set includes the following three full-length books:

ALL IN: DOUBLE OR NOTHING

Lauren Jefferson is a sweet, sexy woman who has always had terrible luck in life. She started "exotic dancing" when she was sixteen to keep a roof over her and her mother's head.

Tyler Evans is a cocky police officer who responds to Lauren's accident on Friday the thirteenth when some idiot runs a red light and hits her. Tyler and Lauren make plans to meet up later that night. Unfortunately, duty calls and Tyler gets held up.

While waiting for Tyler at the bar, Lauren is approached by Caleb, a gorgeous looking bad boy. Giving up on her MIA LEO, Lauren is instantly drawn to the fun loving Caleb.

When Tyler finally shows up at the bar an hour late, he's shocked to find Lauren in the arms of another man. Not just any man, but his best friend.

Lauren indecision between the two men leads her to cross a few lines. After that, all bets are off. Emotions run high, and somehow the three will end up in a no holds barred game, where the winner takes all.

ALL IN: BETTING ON A FULL HOUSE

Jessica Dodson’s life has been anything but easy. At seventeen, she ran away from home with her younger brother to protect them both from their abusive father. Now she’s ready to have a little fun, including a fling with a hot police officer.

Police Officer Tyler Evans can’t catch a break. He was recently shot in the line of duty, and he just got dumped by Lauren, the first women he’s ever loved.

Jess, a sexy and sassy exotic dancer, is just the woman to help Tyler forget the woman he lost. She knows she’s nothing more than a stand-in for Lauren, but being with Tyler, even temporarily, is just too good.

One night of excessive drinking sets a series of events into motion that will change Tyler and Jess’s lives, making them question their future together.

Will Tyler be able to convince Jess that she’s more to him than a distraction, a replacement for Lauren, and more than an obligation? Or will the ghosts of Jess’s hellish past completely shatter Tyler and Jess’s happily ever after?

ALL IN: CALLING HIS BLUFF

Julie Reavis thinks the sorority girls at her expensive private school are all idiots. For some reason, they've wrongly mislabeled Dylan, her brother Will's long-time best friend (all six feet, four inches of his buff, blonde, Greek god-like gorgeousness) as being gay. However, she doesn't mind using their mistake to make Dylan an indecent proposal.

Jules asks Dylan to educate her in the bedroom, showing her how to be sexier and more desired by men. In exchange for his help, she'll pretend to be his girlfriend.

Millionaire Dylan Daughtry is tired of dealing with greedy gold diggers, but he's desperate to get laid. He's so desperate that he considers going behind his best friend Will's back to teach his little sister, Jules, the art of pleasuring men in exchange for her help "getting out of the closet" and squashing rumors about his sexuality.

Dylan surrenders to the temptation of Jules's offer, and they immediately start off her sex-ed with a bang. Dylan had no idea that the sweet, shy, and innocent Jules is a sexy little exhibitionist, or that he'd become addicted to her. Despite how much he wants her, he knows his best friend will never approve of him going after his little sister, so Dylan decides to just make Jules his sexy little secret.

When Will catches Dylan and Jules in the act he's quick to call bullshit on Dylan's confession of love, sure he'll break Jules's heart. Will's prediction comes true when a secret Dylan’s been keeping is uncovered. Dylan suddenly realizes that the most important things in life can’t be bought. He'll have to figure out a way to beg for forgiveness after hurting the one person he'd give away his entire fortune to have.

Hot! Hot! Hot!!
By Jill A. Harris
These guys and gals are HOT! You have to be careful holding your phone/kindle/book or it might just combust! I love how the stories are independent, however they all tie into each other. If you've not read one of the previous, you aren't in the dark, but you get more details on how and why something happened. I've loved all of Lane's books and can't wait to see what she comes out with next.

Triple the sexy
By Kairee Erwin
Copy for honest review

Book 1:
This book is unique and was kind of new for me because their were technically three main characters. Of the three stories in this box set, this was the most nerve wracking dealing with the chemistry between the three.

I did not like Lauren and after reading the set I still don't really like her. She has had a hard upbringing and does not trust easily. I feel that once she comes to terms that she has to learn to trust again she becomes more likable. Caleb is super sexy and fun. Their chemistry together brings out the best in both of them when they decide to commit. Tyler is also a sexy character, who I feel needed time to grow as a person but has a lot to give. The story of this triangle is intense and erotic.

Book 2:
Tyler finally gets his chance to have love. I feel that after the emotional drama that Tyler went through in the first book that it's understandable that he doesn't want to get too attached. However when he decides to commit, he becomes one of the sweetest men I've read about.

Jessica is sassy strong women who has also had a hard upbringing. She takes care of her younger brother Jon. There is an intense situation that Jessica goes through. Though the way she went about it at first annoyed me I feel that her character gives you events you connect you and makes you think while you read. Their story has many ups and downs and intense situations but also beautiful events.

Book 3:
Dylan is my favorite of the three hands down! He's sweet and sexy and sometimes while reading just made me melt. Then you have his erotic side that never ceased to surprise me.

Julie is a head strong women who needs to gain some confidence in herself. She's tired of just being the little sister. I feel she grows into herself as a women. This story is sexy and sweet all together.

Dirty romantic
By john makaokalani
Dirty romantic is the best way to describe this series. Of course that is 'dirty' in a good way! I don't always enjoy sex scenes but the scenes in these three books were enjoyable and not too over the top. There was enough of a good storyline to keep you hooked and wanting to keep reading. The next book is definitely in my future reading list.

From Ritual to Romance, by Jessie L. Weston

From Ritual to Romance is a 1920 book written by Jessie L. Weston. The work is notable for being mentioned by T. S. Eliot in the notes to his poem, The Waste Land: Not only the title, but the plan and a good deal of the incidental symbolism of the poem were suggested by Miss Jessie L. Weston's book. Weston's book is an academic examination of the roots of the King Arthur legends and seeks to make connections between the early pagan elements and the later Christian influences. The book's main focus is on the Holy Grail tradition and its influence, particularly the Wasteland motif. The origins of Weston's book are in James George Frazer's seminal work on folklore, magic and religion, The Golden Bough, and in the works of Miss Jane Ellen Harrison.

Going to the Source
By Giuseppe C.
Because Eliot's "Waste Land" is taught in virtually every British and American lit survey course, the name "Jessie Weston" and the title "From Ritual to Romance" have become familiar to perhaps millions of readers throughout the world. However, if readers hope to get beyond the "trivial pursuit" question of the source to which Eliot was indebted and to a genuine understanding of the "Fisher King" myth, they will need to read that source for themselves. Though not a quick and accessible read, the book repays the reader's patience. Not only does it help bring Eliot's poem to life but it illuminates the poetic tradition from Chaucer to Eliot and makes more meaningful the numerous adaptations of the myth in modern culture--from David Lodge's "Small World" to Robin Williams' "The Fisher King." Not for a sophomore survey course, but definitely for any upperlevel course on Eliot or Arthurian legend.

A great place to start....
By A Customer
Jessie Weston's work on the Fisher King is a great starting point for the reader interested in the possible origins of the Fisher King myth. Weston has catalogued all of the many versions of the myth, the various important elements, and proposed origins. However, since there is no way to definitively prove the origins of the Fisher King myth, the reader should proceed with extreme caution when working with Weston's book. Since the Fisher King myth is highly derived and we have no manuscripts that mention the Fisher King before Chretien, Weston's hypotheses are highly speculative. Nevertheless, this book is a great "introduction" to the many aspects of the Fisher King myth. For the student of Arthurian literature, this book is a "must read."

Excellent Synthesis of Grail Literature with Mystery Cults
By Carla O'Harris
The review below which tries to discredit this amazing book is propaganda based on innuendo and inaccuracies. Actually, Weston's book does not fall with the fall of Frazer's theories. Many of Frazer's theories are still quite valid, something the reviewer doesn't bother to mention ; what are mainly critiqued in Frazer was his evolutionary approach to religion (a common characteristic of scholars of the time which is disparaging of less technologically developed societies), his simplistic notions of the distinctions between religion and science and their interrelationship, and at present, his use of the comparative method is not in style in the academy, although such trends tend to follow a pendulum development. What is undisputed is his firm grasp of classical material (he was a Classics scholar), and his accurate rendering of European folklore, which does fit the classical models he invokes. There is nothing radical in these ideas ; however, there is an agenda to discredit them by those who oppose the "Jesus Myth" theory. All of this is preface to an apologetic for Weston's book, because it demonstrates that the polemics against Frazer are inaccurate, and therefore the primary arguments she draws from Frazer stands. However, she herself has done independent research showing the interrelationship of the themes in common between ancient religious complexes like the Osiris-Adonis-Attis dying and rising gods who renew the fertility of the land, and the Wasteland themes in the Grail. It is popular nowadays to dismiss Weston's view as if she were naive ; in fact, she is quite aware of her critics even in her time and takes the time to carefully answer them. What is clear is the following : 1) The cult of Tammuz/Adonis was in fact about a king whose life, death, and resurrection were linked to the fertility of the land (as was Osiris as well), 2) The seasonal festivals described by Mannhardt and Frazer (as well as multiple other folklorists) does fit the Tammuz pattern in striking fashion, and 3) The Grail themes Weston outlines do in fact exist in the literature, and do match 1) and 2)above. You may disagree with her conclusions, but these three commonalities are FACTS that must be reckoned with. In short, this is an excellent book that connects many of the dots in an ancient mystery, in a satisfying and thorough manner.

On Uneven Ground: Miyazawa Kenji and the Making of Place in Modern Japan, by Hoyt Long

The history of literary and artistic production in modern Japan has typically centered on the literature and art of Tokyo, yet cultural activity in the country's regional cities and rural towns was no less vibrant. On Uneven Ground recovers pieces of this neglected history through the figure of Miyazawa Kenji (1896-1933). While alive, he remained a mostly unknown and unread provincial author whose experiments with narrative fiction, amateur theater, and farmer's art reveal an intense determination to reimagine and remake his native place, in the northeast of Japan, meaningful.

Today, Miyazawa is one of the most recognized figures in Japan's modern literary canon. The story of his radical posthumous rise presents an opportunity to examine the larger history of how writing and other forms of artistic practice have intersected with place-based identity and the uneven geography of cultural production. The first book-length study of Miyazawa in English, On Uneven Ground centers on Miyazawa's life and writing to recreate a sense of what it was to write about and remake place from a spatially marginal position in the cultural field.

Review
"Long's concentrated attention to place making in this book . . . allows Long to say much that is new and of consequence about [Miyazawa], while adding to our understanding of cultural production in Japan's interwar period, and of the complex structures that impact how meaning is assigned to locality."—Sarah M. Strong, Asian Studies Review

"[Long's] detailed, theoretical study of place—both center and periphery in interwar Japan—illustrates how locality determines literary reception. . . Recommended."—E. J. Hogan, CHOICE

"On one level, Hoyt Long's provocatively argued and historically grounded study illuminates the intellectual and cultural contributions of one of Japan's best loved literary writers. But it is much more; his theoretically sophisticated analysis sheds light on hierarchies of center and periphery in empire, networks of cultural flow, and the creative imagination's entanglement with society and ideas."—Ann Sherif, Oberlin College

"Long's study not only provides us fresh insight into Miyazawa Kenji's oeuvre, but also into the complex relationship between the institutions of cultural (re-)production and the literary product; in so doing, his attention to 'the local' contributes to the destabilization of persistent notions of a singular, monolithic national Japanese literature."—Edward Mack, University of Washington

"This study charts an entirely new course in our thinking and writing about texts, authors, and locales. Miyazawa Kenji and his region are employed as focal points to incorporate an enormous variety of knowledge concerning Japanese literary movements and cultures. It is required reading for those with an interest in modern Japan beyond the borders of Tokyo."—Richard Torrance, The Ohio State University
"Hoyt Long reinvents the single author study by examining the life and afterlife of Miyazawa Kenji to reveal the conditions of literary production that initially marginalized, then monumentalized Miyazawa's work. A sophisticated analysis that reframes 20th century literary history and its heroes."—Louise Young, Professor of History, UW-Madison

great stuff, but ...
By C. P. Anderson
This guy is really good. I've read a couple of his books, and have always been impressed how much wisdom and honesty there are in them.

This book strikes me as particularly realistic. Instead of the typical pablum about teamwork, growth, etc., he really lays it on the line. Let's face it: the typical organization is rather dysfunctional, politics are big, not everybody you meet has it all together, you have to play the game, it's not what you know ... all that good stuff.

His basic thrust is that this is reality. You can stew about it, you can complain about it, you can worry about it, but none of that really changes anything. So, if you want to do something about it, you have to basically start with yourself. You have to determine what you can do (and very little of that involves the full frontal assault that is so tempting to the disgruntled) and go ahead and actually do it. At the same time, you also have to keep in mind that there are a ton of things you simply cannot change.

The advice seems really spot-on. My guess is it comes, not from speculating about what might or should be, but from lots and lots of talking with real people on the couch.

On the other hand, I'm giving this only 4 stars because it seemed to be perhaps a little TOO realistic. At points, I got a feeling that he was simply telling me to just suck it up - or to just grow up. He also very straightforwardly says to suck up and to be a bit of a phony.

I think there's a lot of truth to these, but would have appreciated a little more selling on his part, maybe a little more nuance. I know a lot of these things are true, but it doesn't make me like them any more. How do I deal with that dissonance?

In addition, my 25 years experience in the real world tells me that not all companies are the same. I've been at some total turkeys and at some really great ones. My personal advice would be, if you're at a turkey, to suck it up until you can move on to that better company. Perhaps listening to people on the couch all day gave Dr. Bernstein a rather *jaundiced* view of reality. ;^)

One final strength of this book is the writing style. It's short, sweet, to the point, structured (i.e., lots of lists and short, targeted sections), and also uses humor and stories very tellingly.

I'm reading it again and again.
By Kate H. Kelley
I feel empowered and smart after reading, Am I the only SANE ONE working here? Dr. Albert Bernstein offers practical solutions to everyday problems in the workplace. The solutions include guidance on how I can make the change happen without expectation of others changing first. I recall following the survival solutions for defusing anger and had immediate results because my actions changed the other person's response. The book is well written, easy to understand, and memorable. It is the kind of book you will want to reference when issues arise. I was amazed at how this author could come up with something so useful. It's a must read for anyone who wants to understand how to survive and even thrive in the workplace. Kate Kelley

Practical solutions
By €n€
We all want to be right. The other books try to help you convince other people that you are. Just say this and your problem is solved. Unfortunately, your coworkers didn't read that book so they don't react the way the book said they would.

You cannot change other people. It's rare that you can change situations that other people have control over. This book pounds home the fact that you can only change your reaction to the situations and people you encounter.

It's not enough to just know that fact. Knowing it's true and making it work are 2 different things. Solutions are explained in such a way that you can use them. You aren't dependent on how the other people acting or reacting. It's up to you and what you are willing to let go... really let go.

You behave based on what will help you achieve your own goals not on your emotions. And sometimes you just have to suck it up. This situation can't be changed because you are not in charge. Deal with it or leave.

The ride of her life . . .
Once upon a time, Carissa Teodoro believed in happy endings. Money, marriage, motherhood: everything came easy---until she woke up to the ugly truth about her Prince Charming. Now a struggling, single mom and stranded by a flat tire, Carissa's pondering her mistakes when a vaguely familiar knight rides to her rescue on a ton of horsepower.

Climb on and hold tight . . .
In high school, Carson Steele was a bad boy loner who put Carissa on a pedestal where she stayed far beyond his reach. Today, he's the hard-bodied biker known only as Joker, and from the way Carissa's acting, it's clear she's falling fast. While catching her is irresistible, knowing what to do with her is a different story. A good girl like Carissa is the least likely fit with the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Too bad holding back is so damned hard. Now, as Joker's secrets are revealed and an outside threat endangers the club, Joker must decide whether to ride steady with Carissa---or ride away forever . . .

About the Author
Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

A new KA favorite, Joker is perfection.

The story that evolves between Carissa Teodoro and Carson "Joker" Steele has just officially made Ride Steady one of my all-time favorite KA books. I loved everything about this story, from the prologue that introduced Carissa and Carson as high school students quietly crushing on each other without the other ever knowing, to the sad goodbye they exchanged that ultimately changed the trajectory of both their lives, again without the other ever knowing, to the completely unexpected way they came to reconnect years later, their lives unrecognizable from what they once were. The build between these characters, the course of events this story took, every single moment from the second they laid eyes on each other on the side of I-25 completely consumed me. Fiercely palpable emotion, sexual tension and sweet romance oozed from these pages. Ride Steady, from the very first page to the very last, is wholly addictive and completely unforgettable.

Ride Steady had possibly the best prologue I've read in a Kristen Ashley book to date. Carson Steele's childhood was heartbreaking, but through it all, he displayed such resilience and strength and kindness. Even as an abused, neglected, abandoned young man, he was just magnetic, always doing right by people, showing gratitude and respect to the people that looked out for him. It only took those few pages of the prologue to give me such an extraordinary impression of this guy, this guy that I felt instantly drawn to. I knew this story would be something fantastic from those first few pages and I instantly wanted to devour this book. What I couldn't know from so early on was what would become of that bright, determined, damaged young man; how he went from that quiet loner to a member of the Chaos MC. And what became of the pretty blonde cheerleader he watched from afar in high school, never knowing that she did the same to him.

I love that Kristen Ashley writes lengthy novels that take me several days to get through. I love getting lost in her books and savoring them. But I did not, could not, savor Ride Steady because I wanted to devour it without coming up for air. I could not put this book down. Carson Steele is one of the most magnetic leading men Kristen Ashley has ever penned... and that's a seriously heavy statement right there because I've loved all of her alpha males loads. His goodness, his light, his intelligence, his determination, his stepping in to care for a child that isn't his with a woman he never thought he'd have, his love for his club brothers, his respect for the people that looked after him when his own family didn't, EVERY SINGLE THING that makes Carson Steele who he is is absolute perfection. He's up there with Ty Walker and Luke Stark in my top KA guys as of NOW.

I'm in awe of the way Kristen Ashley seamlessly introduces brand new characters, while weaving in old characters from previous books. The Dream Men, the Hot Bunch from the Rock Chick series, the ever growing and evolving Chaos crew, the Unfinished Heroes, a photographer from the Magdalene series, all play small but pivotal parts in this multifaceted plot. I've heard readers say they don't like the way KA introduces so many secondary characters, that it becomes too much, too crazy. WRONG. It's mastery what she does with her characters. It's flawless and fluid and freaking fantastic and she does it in a way that makes me remember every detail of every book she's ever written. She continually reminds me of why I loved these characters in the first place, what they brought to the table and how much I love to see their individual stories all continue to converge in new books. I can not possibly say enough about the genius that is Kristen Ashley. She's such a phenomenal story teller, but she's so smart about it. She creates these stories that are never just a linear A to B journey. There's no end in sight for these characters so you know you'll see them again in other books, because there's always a need for Lee Nightingale's intel, or Hawk Delgado's badass commando assistance or Elvira's shopping expertise or Tack Allen's biker connections or Knight Sebring's stable handling. There's always room for a bounty hunter or a cop or a pie baked by a women we met 15 books ago. Not many authors can do that, give life to every character they've ever dreamed up and do it in such a way that it always feels exciting and fresh and new and nostalgic to see them again and again. It's clear that Kristen Ashley loves these characters so deeply in the way she insists they keep returning and bringing all that is them to new stories, even if it's just for a moment. She doesn't just write books. She's created a world of characters that love and fight and hurt and hope and come together at pivotal moments, but do so fluidly, like it's the most natural, authentic, believable, real thing in the universe.

Kristen Ashley upped her game with Ride Steady. I didn't think that was possible because she's on the top of her game every time. But something about this book just felt like... more. Her writing. The character development. The story itself, the way she broke her own rules, doing the exact opposite with these characters than I expected based on what she typically does. The dialogue. The romance. The seamless way she weaves in droves of other characters and their own stories and families and lives. Something intangible about this book set it apart in my eyes and that is a feat because this author is my all-time favorite and I hold so many of her books in the highest regard. Ride Steady is full of humor, witty one-liners, sarcasm, every single word placed perfectly. It's also fraught with raw emotion, both heartbreak and joy, loss and hope. The romance felt sweeter in this story, the Chaos brotherhood felt stronger and more profound, the drama driving the plot felt clean and tight. This book is just packaged perfection. I felt so much in these pages, I laughed, I cried, I loved. Kristen Ashley nailed it. This book is just phenomenal.

Cinderella biker style
By love to read
I'm still not sure what I think of this book, and I've spent a lot of time thinking about it! I found it strange that all of the conflict happens in the prologue and then the rest of the book is basically one long tale of everything going well. Although the hero was terribly abused as a child he's "healed" before he gets together with the heroine and in fact appears to be for the rest of the book. The hero and heroine never have issues with each other, their relationship is hiccup free. Whatever he reveals she just smiles and accepts. Meanwhile, Chaos is more like a fairy godmother than a motorcycle club. They sweep in and fix every problem the heroine has - piling money, gifts and protection onto her head. They don't stop there, they go on to fix things for anyone else who comes across their path - because it is the right thing to do, which is admirable, but not really believable. The "badass" men spend an inordinate amount of time talking about their feelings and giving each other relationship advice. The heroine's character doesn't develop at all throughout the book. The background plot issues, like the club under threat from a drug dealer and the ex-husband's machinations, all fade into nothing. As soon as an issue appears, its fixed with very little effort, leaving you wondering why it was brought up in the first place. And don't even get me started on the saintly biker babysitter! I'm still shaking my head in wonder at that character. I can honestly say that I've never read anything like this. And as I said, I don't know what to think. It isn't badly written and there are some lovely parts, but it's very strange. It's almost like reading Cinderella - but without the troublesome ugly stepsisters and a motorcycle club in place of a fairy godmother.

This book is ok....
By Meanbean7
I am fairly new to this author, I started with Hop and Lanies story then Shy and Tabbys, and absolutely loved both.

This book, *very light spoilers ahead continue at your own risk* about a couple that met in high-school, fell in love with each other but neither he nor she knew the others feelings and parted ways, then reunited and discovered the truth, and it all fell flat to me. I liked Joker, i liked Carissa and they liked each other, this all happened in very few pages and yet the book just kept going and going....

My first complaint is, I almost thought the way all the other couples kept cropping up that this was a series wrap up but the end has a sneak peak into the next book so I was definitely wrong about that, so it was just filler. Also, the drama with the ex that really wasn't drama at all in the end, again just filler that seemed to lead nowhere. The custody battle was built up, leading you to think something was going to happen, but nope. Everything's fine, arrangement stays the same besides a few hundred bucks extra in child support, (I thought when you're sharing joint custody, you aren't entitled to child support, but ok whatever) that just did not need to be in there at all. And while I felt it could've been removed entirely, it took up huge parts of the story.

Another filler was the thing with his father. Build up to a show down, meh when it actually happened. The hooker? Again, same theme as the custody dispute and his dad, there was build up to these going places, then they just fizzled out into nothing.

And final complaint was the style of writing. Her previous two books I read had a distinctive style when writing the alpha bikers and the biker babes, the way they talked, acted ect....and while I liked Joker, it just wasn't the same and I missed that. Same goes for Carissa, when compared to Lanie or Tab she just didn't didn't seem to be written the same and I liked the other style better.

I will say overall this book was ok. The couple with Travis was adorable, and I did like it. But I expected to love it, so that was definitely disappointing to me. I am fine having read this once, and if you read the Chaos series I'd recommend it to you, but unlike the others I personally will not be rereading. If you're new to the series maybe hold off on this and get one of the other two.

Lastly, I am sad I didn't care for the sneak peak of the next book. The style seemed more like this vs that distinctive style from the previous ones and I don't care for flash back books that take place in multiple time settings, but I'll still most likely end up reading it.

Q, the Earliest Gospel: An Introduction to the Original Stories and Sayings of Jesus, by John S. Kloppenborg

Estimated to date back to the very early Jesus movement, the lost Gospel known as Q offers a distinct and remarkable picture of Jesus and his significance--and one that differs markedly from that offered by its contemporary, the apostle Paul.

Q presents Jesus as a prophetic critic of unbelief and a sage with the wisdom that can transform. In Q, the true meaning of the "kingdom of God" is the fulfillment of a just society through the transformation of the human relationships within it.

Though this document has never been found, John Kloppenborg offers a succinct account of why scholars maintain it existed in the first place and demonstrates how they have been able to reconstruct its contents and wording from the two later Gospels that used it as a source: Matthew and Luke. Presented here in its entirety, as developed by the International Q Project, this Gospel reveals a very different portrait of Jesus than in much of the later canonical writings, challenging the way we think of Christian origins and the very nature and mission of Jesus Christ.

Informed, Impressively Scholarly Yet Clear-Sighted and Easy To Read!
By John Howard Reid
The author of this book, Professor John S. Kloppenborg, was the co-editor of both "The Critical Edition of Q" and "The Sayings Gospel Q in Greek and English." He is therefore in a unique position not only to introduce this initial collection of sayings and stories of Jesus, but to explain both how this reconstruction was formulated, and its importance to an understanding of the philosophy and character of early Christianity. In the course of this discussion, Professor Kloppenborg is also of course concerned to demonstrate how both Matthew and Luke adapted Document Q to suit their own purposes. For example, the beatitudes which Matthew groups in what we term his "chapter five", using the well-known literary device we call "The Sermon on the Mount", were probably originally gathered in Document Q in various places. From Q, they can be rendered as follows: "Blessed are you poor, for God's reign is for you. Blessed are you who hunger, for you will eat your fill. Blessed are you who mourn, for you will be consoled. Blessed are you when they insult and persecute you, and say every kind of evil against you because of the Son of Man. Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. Many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but never saw it, and to hear what you hear, but never heard it. [Blessed are the humble]. Everyone exalting himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord." Notice that this list omits the verse promising "the humble and lowly" that they will "inherit the earth", which, in my opinion, can certainly be regarded as a gloss. All told, this introduction to Q is fascinating, informative and superbly researched. I have only two extremely minor reservations. I was surprised that, despite the lengthy discussions and comparisons with the Gospel of Thomas in the text, that Marvin Meyer's book was not listed in "Further Reading". And I was a little amazed the author asserts that the meaning of the very peculiar Greek word "epiousios" is not known. Jerome tells us that it means "super-substantial." My research indicates that the word was a slang term referring to the super-generous or overly generous daily ration of food that an overseer or foreman might receive. An excellent overview of Q
By Graeme Duncan
I approached this book with caution as I suspected it may be too dry and academic. On the contrary, it is well written, readable, and engaging. Admittedly one must be truly wanting to immerse oneself in the reasons for Q being derived. For me at the beginning I knew that this book contained a good version of derived Q from a respected author and that was key. The approach to derivation and relationship to other Gospels, Didache, James gave me significant fresh insights into the true Jesus I seek. I definately recommend this book.

Too short
By Dr. James Gardner
Professor Kloppenborg states that the purpose of this book is "an introduction to the Sayings Gospel Q, treating four basic questions: Why should we think there was a Q? What did Q look like? What difference does Q make? And what happened to Q?" Fair enough. Let's examine the result.

Why should we think there was a Q? is the first chapter and the longest (40 pages). Unfortunately, 40 pages is not sufficient to make a good case for Q much less to give fair time to the alternate theories about why Matthew and Luke differ from Mark in certain ways. Indeed, there is a lack of substantial charts and diagrams to fully flush out the points that Kloppenborg makes, and so he relies on the reader having an expert knowledge of the 4 gospels. Time and time again he'll say something like - "Take, for example, John the Baptist's address to the crowds (Matt. 3:7-10 \\ Luke 3:7-9). The agreement between Matthew and Luke is remarkable..." I, for one, would like to see the passages themselves and make my own judgement as to whether or not the agreement is remarkable. In the entire first chapter, he only provides 3 illustrations of what he is talking about. The rest of the time the reader will be forced to go to the gospels and look at it themselves. Now, in an advanced book this would be acceptable, but in a book that purports to be an introduction, more use should have been made of these types of comparison charts.

In addition, Kloppenborg deals with the gospels as if they were written at a single moment in time. In truth, the gospels were likely composed over centuries, with pieces being added and subtracted all the time. This dynamic writing needs to be addrsssed when we compare the gospels, but Kloppenborg tends to treat them as if they were written once.

With regard to "What did Q look like", Kloppenborg's brief chapter (21 pages) didn't give me a clear picture of Q. He does have a chart (page 43) that gives us the supposed Q text, but it consists of items like "John's preaching (3:7b-9, 16b-17)" which isn't really helpful at all. There is an appendix called "The Sayings Gospel Q in English" but that really wasn't so helpful either. If I seem hard to please, it's because I was looking for a reproduction of what Kloppenborg thought the Q gospel looked like. That's what he said he was going to address. Instead the chapter tells us what the supposed Q gospel contained, but we are no closer to knowing what it looked like.

Kloppenborg clearly knows his material, and I can't help but think that in a longer introductory book he could have achieved his goals. In the current book he falls short.
