Miri Nakamura contends instead that these monsters were products of modernity, informed by the newly imported scientific discourses on the body, and that they can be read as being complicit in the ideologies of the empire, for they are uncanny bodies that ignite a sense of terror by blurring the binary of “normal” and “abnormal” that modern sciences like eugenics and psychology created. Reading these literary bodies against the historical rise of the Japanese empire and its colonial wars in Asia, Nakamura argues that they must be understood in relation to the most “monstrous” body of all in modern Japan: the carefully constructed image of the empire itself.

About the Author

Michael P. Reiman, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, ATC, FAAOMPT, CSCS, is an assistant professor of physical therapy and the codirector of the orthopaedic manual therapy fellowship program at Duke University Medical Center. As a clinician, Reiman has more than 20 years of experience assessing, rehabilitating, and training athletes and clients. He has presented on orthopedic assessment and treatment methods at national and international conferences and actively participates in research regarding various testing methods for orthopedic examination and intervention and human performance. Reiman coauthored Functional Testing in Human Performance and has written 12 book chapters and more than 40 peer-reviewed articles. He currently serves on the editorial boards for multiple sport- and orthopedic-related journals.

Reiman received his doctoral degree in physical therapy from MGH Institute of Health Professions and is currently pursuing his PhD. In addition to his certifications as an athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist, Reiman is a manual therapy fellow through the American Academy of Orthopedic and Manual Physical Therapists, a USA Weightlifting level 1 coach, and a USA Track and Field level 1 coach. He is also the chair of the Sports Section Hip Special Interest Group of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Excellent resource

This is the first text book i've encountered to provides such in depth fundamental knowledge and a thorough evidenced-based examination. I especially like the special sections in the back focusing on specialized groups of patients. Future students are very lucky to have such an excellent resource.

Lindsay Gibb is a librarian and journalist with a specific interest in zines, film, and comics. She co-programs the Toronto Comic Arts Festival’s Librarian and Educator Day and her writing has appeared in Shameless, This Magazine, and Playback. She was the editor of Broken Pencil magazine and co-founded Spacing magazine. Lindsay lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Nicolas Cage is a genius. This book will prove it to you.

In 'National Treasure: Nicolas Cage,' Lindsay Gibb makes the argument that Nicolas Cage is an actor of genius who has made deliberate choices to pursue his art.

Nicolas Cage and his acting roles can inspire great debates among film fans. Some are fans of certain films he has made, and some of others. With a wildly diverse range of roles and characters that act out of the normal range, people can be put off by the way Nicolas Cage portrays them. He's been a leading man, and deliberately picked supporting parts. He has played Elvis and cops and lowlifes and drunks. Just when you think you know what he's going to do next, he jumps to another form, or stays with what he's been doing. His acting style has ranged from realism to Western Kabuki.

As a fan of Nicolas Cage, I have sometimes found myself defending that, but Lindsay Gibb is a true fan. Her arguments are backed up with quotes and notes. She even held a Nicolas Cage film festival to help research for this book.

I love the Pop Classics series by ECW Press and this is another in a series that has talked about Elvis Costello, Showgirls, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They are fun, short books to read and I've enjoyed the few I've gotten to review.

Thoughtful, Well-Researched, Entertaining Cage Analysis!

I wish I could give a book more than five stars. This book is, essentially, a more thoughtful and well-researched version of #CageClub. I'm not really the target demographic here; I already know Cage is great, and one of our best actors. But this made me think in ways I hadn't already -- and I've spent A LOT of time thinking about Cage -- and introduced me to many, many great quotes and analysis I haven't seen yet. Great work, Lindsay Gibb!
