Mansfield is quite straightforward in presenting that the understanding that you get what you pay for. That yes, there are lots of free tools out there, but you might want to consider for fee services for greater return. Ditto on contracting/hiring a social media professional vs. going it alone.

I also found it very useful like that if one starts on page 1 with limited knowledge by the time you got to the end of the book, you can have a reasonably solid plan for moving forward with an integrated approach to social media.

A tremendously generous, wise book from someone who "gets it"

As a marketing author myself, every time I share ideas, invariably someone says, "And that would work really well for non-profits, too!" Well, Heather Mansfield has written the definitive 1-2 punch with "Social Media for Good" and "Mobile for Good" that shows non-profit leaders how to get a handle on social media - and all marketing, really - to expand their influence, impact, and income.

Everything is laid out, step by step and piece by piece. Unlike so many social media AND mobile marketing books, THIS book is great because nothing is assumed and nothing is left out.

A systematic approach to smarter marketing for mission-driven organizations. And shhhh... a lot of these ideas would be devastatingly effective in the for-profit world, too.

Great tool for creating a Mobile and Social Media Strategy

Mobile For Good was great help for getting organisational buy-in for a social media strategy. I have no doubt that our soon-to-be implemented social media strategy will benefit my non-profit.

This book lays out some really insightful and interesting ideas to consider when implementing a social media strategy. It's an invaluable tool for a New Media Manager both in and outside of the non-profit sector. I appreciate that Mansfield is quite overt about the dire need for the role of social media in fundraising and cause-awareness campaigns. As a non-profit newbie, I got really excited about the prospects ahead of us taking more of a social approach to our online fundraising strategy.

Definitely worth the read!

About the Author

As a researcher of statistical problems in business and a professor of Statistics at a business school, Norean Radke Sharpe (Ph.D. University of Virginia) understands the challenges and specific needs of the business student. She is currently teaching at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, where she is also Senior Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs. Prior to joining Georgetown, she taught business statistics and operations research courses to both undergraduate and MBA students for fourteen years at Babson College. Before moving into business education, she taught statistics for several years at Bowdoin College and conducted research at Yale University. Norean is coauthor of the recent text, A Casebook for Business Statistics: Laboratories for Decision Making, and she has authored more than 30 articles—primarily in the areas of statistics education and women in science. Norean currently serves as Associate Editor for the journal Cases in Business, Industry, and Government Statistics. Her research focuses on business forecasting and statistics education. She is also co-founder of DOME Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit foundation that works to increase Diversity and Outreach in Mathematics and Engineering for the greater Boston area. She has been active in increasing the participation of women and underrepresented students in science and mathematics for several years and has two children of her own.

Richard D. De Veaux (Ph.D. Stanford University) is an internationally known educator, consultant, and lecturer. Dick has taught statistics at a business school (Wharton), an engineering school (Princeton), and a liberal arts college (Williams). While at Princeton, he won a Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching. Since 1994, he has taught at Williams College, although he returned to Princeton for the academic year 2006–2007 as the William R. Kenan Jr. Visiting Professor of Distinguished Teaching. He is currently the C. Carlisle and Margaret Tippit Professor of Statistics at Williams College. Dick holds degrees from Princeton University in Civil Engineering and Mathematics and from Stanford University in Dance Education and Statistics, where(he studied with Persi Diaconis. His research focuses on the analysis of large data sets(and data mining in science and industry. Dick has won both the Wilcoxon and Shewell awards from the American Society for Quality. He is an elected member of the International Statistics Institute (ISI) and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the ASA. Dick is well known in industry, having consulted for such Fortune 500 companies as American Express, Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, DuPont, Pillsbury, General Electric, and Chemical Bank. He was named the “Statistician of the Year” for 2008 by the Boston Chapter of the American Statistical Association for his contributions to teaching, research, and consulting. In his spare time he is an avid cyclist and swimmer. He also is the founder and bass for the doo-wop group, the Diminished Faculty, and is a frequent singer and soloist with various local choirs including the Choeur Vittoria of Paris, France. Dick is the father of four children.

Paul F. Velleman (Ph.D. Princeton University) has an international reputation for innovative statistics education. He designed the Data Desk� software package and is also the author and designer of the award-winning ActivStats� multimedia software, for which he received the EDUCOM Medal for innovative uses of computers in teaching statistics and the ICTCM Award for Innovation in Using Technology in College Mathematics. He is the founder and CEO of Data Description, Inc. (www.datadesk.com), which supports both of these programs. He also developed the Internet site, Data and Story Library (DASL; lib.stat.cmu.edu/DASL/), which provides data sets for teaching Statistics. Paul coauthored (with David Hoaglin) the book ABCs of Exploratory Data Analysis. Paul teaches Statistics at Cornell University in the Department of Statistical Sciences and in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, for which he has been awarded the MacIntyre prize for Exemplary Teaching. His research often focuses on statistical graphics and data analysis methods. Paul is

At least read the summary @ bottom- Okay- but not sure i'd reccomend.

The textbook shipped fast, and paper quality is decent (some reviews state that the paper is thin- I didn't see any issues with it). There is no CD, so check with your professor if the CD is required or not for your course.

The chapter's are the same, however, the chapter problems are DIFFERENT. Some are the same, but many are different than the actual textbook- so be careful if your grade is based off of homework assignments involving the chapter problems at the end of the chapter. I know this from comparing my text with others in my class.

Kind of blows finding out almost half way through class when your professor starts grading your assignments and your grade is suffering from the homework assignment.

I contacted Amazon, they were great but since this purchased from a seller I had to message them directly. I've sent a message to the seller- will update once I hear back.

Summary: Great to purchase for just the text.
Be Careful: If your looking for the CD or for the chapter problems you could be wasting your $$.

Useless Because the Included Datasets are For Another Book

The included CD is not for the third edition of the book! It has 3rd edition printed on the CD, but the material is all for the second edition (including second edition logos!). Thus, most of the chapter exercises are useless since they don't match the datasets on the CD. I have ordered two new copies of the third edition, and both have the same problem. Nor will Pearson correct the problem. I contacted their customer support line, and they insist that it is Amazon's problem.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned this. It makes me suspicious of the other reviews. There is no way that a reviewer could have actually used the book, since this problem would have been completely obvious if you were really using the textbook.

Great book, poor variable choices

Great descriptions and great deal for a great book. What can I say? A book is a book, especially when you need it for class. My only problem is this texts refers to its variables in the typical Statistical way, with little rhyme and reason. It is particularly confusing for me when my professor decides to "alter" those variables and subtle naming of variables. But hey, statistics is statistics

About the Author
David Emory Shi is a professor of history and the president emeritus of Furman University. He is the author of several books on American cultural history, including the award-winning The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture and Facing Facts: Realism in American Thought and Culture, 1850–1920.

Holly Mayer is associate professor of history, Chair of the History Department, and Director of the Historical Studies Graduate Program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Holly’s Ph.D. is from the College of William and Mary. Her research field is late eighteenth-century America, and she is especially interested in civil-military relations during the War for Independence and the evolution of American character and culture. I really like this book! I am a history major at Portland State University and have found this book (and the second one) very useful. It has a lot of important documents that pertain to each period of history in the United States (and a little bit before the founding of). I would suggest this to any teacher that wants to use ACTUAL writings from a specific period in US history. Also, I would recommend these two books, volume one and two, to anybody that is planning on doing a history research paper. These books will not only help you understand other issue(s)/people to research, but also give you a deep perspective of said time period. There is nothing that professors like more than a student who uses facts from the time period! Very well done! An absolute life saver!!!

Defines away language and sexual selection

This book purports to explain why only humans have language. I rate this book as low on one star for two reasons, which combined gives a surprisingly unsatisfactory read.

1) It defines away language as informally understood as what we hear (speech) or what we see (sign language). Instead language is taken to be a mental operation called "merge" that accounts for grammar and structure, whicn in turn has an interface (of a mental type) to externalization, so we can see or hear it manifest itself. But this is not the reason for its existence, they say, the reason we have language (= merge) is not for communication (its external realisation), but it is there to be an "inner mental tool". This immediately raises the question how we know that insects do not have merge, or any other living creature, since, for all we know, they may just lack the interface. For this reason the book may as well have been titled: "Maybe all species have it: language and evolution".

2) They only consider adaptive natural selection as the evolutionary mechanism, and disimisses off hand sexual selection, after a brief discussion of Darwins "Caruso" theory of language evolution, although they give a positive nod towards singing birds. Sexual selection is important in understanding what is called Wallace's problem: why do we observe more than what is needed for survival in species? Also sexual selection may boost the speed of evolution, in particular for an attribute like language which is in no way detriment to survival. But none of this is discussed in connection with language evolution, a major flaw indeed.

The book leaves the reader quite unsatisfied with the question of how language could come to be a manifest behaviour in our species, and its apparent lack in other species. One is better off reading evolution theory (e.g. Darwin himself), and speculate on these matters further from that.

A short monograph well worth reading for its bold thesis. Not to be dismissed offhand by dogmatic adaptationists

I enjoyed this. Their discussion of misconceptions about evolution, though quite general and abstract, was very good. They emphasised the importance of "stochastic processes" very nicely, and I agree with both the authors that there is a substantial amount of dogmatism involved in the strong adaptationist view (and in the charge that Chomsky is being in some way "mystical" for presenting a story of sudden emergence for language). The evidence adduced in favour of their hypothesis was also quite strong overall, with all ground covered to at least some degree: comparative evidence in primates, neuroscience (with several pictures included), genetics, the hierarchical, computationally efficient nature of language etc.
Here are some flaws: the book is slight, and repetitive; sometimes the hypothesis they are putting forward is spoken about in categorical terms, as if it is not a hypothesis at all but a rigorous theory (I get the feeling that these moments of high modality are Chomsky speaking); and Chomsky's defence of the hierarchical, non-linear nature of language (as contrasted with birdsong, for example) is supported by only two English sentences, one of which he has been trotting out in speeches for several years (the sentence "Instinctively, eagles that fly swim", where "Instinctively" binds "swim" rather than "fly").
