Great introduction

This is a great book for the basics. However if you've been in the field for more than a year or two you'll likely not encounter a new topic. There is a lot of focus put on local storage and while its important to safeguard that data, your non-bank/commerce/health apps might be over optimizing in this area. The third party libraries many app developers utilize often take user data with neither party knowing.

I met the author at an Android conference this summer, and he has a lot of insight in to the lack of security around Android. His book is good, maybe a bit dated by now, but still good concepts.

About the Author
While in college, David R. Dowling held summer positions at Hughes Aircraft Co. and the Los Angeles Air Force Station. He completed his doctorate in 1988 at Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology and moved north to Seattle to accomodate his wife's career in medicine. While there, he worked for a year in the laser technology group at Boeing Aerospace, and then for almost three years as a post-doc at the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington. In 1992, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Michigan. Prof. Dowling is currently conducting research in acoustics and fluid mechanics. He is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a member of the American Physical Society. He is a US citizen.

A Textbook that's Interesting

I got the Kindle "rented" version for 3 months - it's ridiculously priced to buy or to rent - obscene and they should be ashamed. That said - the book, while slow going, is absolutely fascinating. I would take this class again just to read the rest of the book that I missed!
It's updated fairly regularly every couple years it seems - I recommend it. Oh, and say goodbye to your money $ka-ching!$$

This book does NOT have identical content to the US Edition!

Please be advised that this version of the text does NOT have the same content as the US edition. The questions, while generally the same, differ slightly, as do the chapter introductions (which some questions are based off of). If you are looking for a cheap alternative to the US book and will be using it to answer questions in class, AVOID THIS VERSION.

An audio book that I could not leave in the car. We had to finish it immediately in the house.

We listened to this book on a day trip that ended up taking a lot longer than expected. It was spellbinding from the very beginning. When we got home, we couldn't stop listening, and had to bring it into the house and continue listening to the very end. I haven't listened to another book that was so compelling.

This was an easy to listen to book when driving. Can stop easily anyplace and pick it right back up when ready.
Really enjoyed it.
