About the Author
John N. Gardner brings unparalleled experience to students as an author. The recipient of his institution's highest award for teaching excellence, John has over forty years of experience directing and teaching in the most widely emulated first-year seminar in the country, the University 101 course at the University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia. John is universally recognized as one of the country's leading educators for his role in initiating and orchestrating an international reform movement to improve the beginning college experience, a concept he coined as "the first-year experience." He is the founding executive director of the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at USC, as well as the Policy Center on the First Year of College and the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education (www.jngi.org), both based in Brevard, N.C. Betsy O. Barefoot is a writer, researcher, and teacher whose special area of scholarship is the first-year seminar. During her tenure at USC from 1988 to 1999, she served as codirector for research and publications at the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She also taught University 101 and graduate courses on the first-year experience and the principles of college teaching. She conducts first-year seminar faculty training workshops around the world and is frequently called on to evaluate first-year seminar outcomes. Betsy is codirector and senior scholar in the Policy Center on the First Year of College and Vice President of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education both in Brevard, N.C. In her Policy Center role she led a major national research project to identify institutions of excellence in the first college year. She currently works with both two- and four-year campuses in evaluating all components of the first year.

Beautifully-realized portrait of a scholarly enclave

A novel set in the intimate, closed world of a school or college (or a convent, or cathedral close) has a better-than-average chance of being fascinating to begin with. Whether a school story is a work of literary art such as Snow's The Masters or Antonia White's Frost in May, a decent novel in the vein of Hughes's Tom Brown's School Days, Kipling's Stalky and Co., or Farrar's Eric, or even the kind of boarding-school story churned out by the likes of Angela Brazil and the author of the Greycliff series, school stories tend to hold one's interest because they are school stories. Generally written by one with insider knowledge, such books seem to reveal not only the characteristics of a society in microcosm, but also the particular stresses and strains imposed by intimate, closed worlds.
Snow's The Masters is perhaps the supreme example of this genre. A perfectly plotted and self-contained novel filled with unforgettable characters (Mrs. Jago, the embittered Despard-Smith and the beautifully-realized Professor M. H. L. Gay come to mind), The Masters is certainly C.P. Snow's best work. Snow's college world is no ivory tower. Passions and ruthless hatreds surface as two factions clash over the election of a new Master of a Cambridge college. The power brokers Chrystal and Brown display their practiced adroitness as they machinate to put their candidate in office and angle for a major benefaction from a wealthy industrialist. Political overtones from the outside world (the novel is set iduring the period of Hitler's rise to power) begin to agitate the election question further. This is a novel to read again and again.

The Politics of the Personal

The Masters concerns an election of the head of a college in England by the masters (professors) at the school. Snow skillfully illustrates to us the politics of small groups, and how very different those politics are from politics in a broader sense. This book is one of the Strangers and Brothers series, but it reads very nicely as a stand-alone work. The Masters is a good read, in which we follow the partisan manuvering of two factions seeking different candidates in the school election. Snow's style is straightforward, almost a latter-day Trollope, and his ideas are very insightful. This is a classic, which deserves to be more read.

Genuine classic

I'd urge you to read this one. Few people describe the inner life of men, or at least his class of 20th century Englishman, so well as Snow. The characterisations are the strength, all vanities and motivations probed as if by a surgeon, though the "closed" politics plot is entertaining enough. Other reviewers list their favourite characters, I'd plump for Winslow and Brown myself. Beautiful writing style.

A book that open up new horizons in physics

This book is very inspiring for physicists and for the future of physics. The first think that comes into your mind when you see the pattern of the spiral field repeating from the atom to the solar system is SPIRALS FRACTALS! The pattern repeats at multi-level nested scales with self similarity. The book shows multi-level spiral as basic subatomic structure with layers and energy vortex. Dr. Ginsburg tried to bridge the gap between spirituality and science when he showed clairvoyant image of the atom which is consistent with Thomson's Atomic Vortex Theory in Classical Electrodynamics. However his work is purely scientific. Finally atom is alive; it has layers and nourishing vortex connecting it to the Source Field (investigated by David Wilcock). New horizons of research open up with the Spiral Field Theory: all natural elements have spiral nature, layers and nourishing vortex. The book is very comprehensive for understanding the history of vortex theory until the development of cybernetics and string theory. What is new in the book is new scheme for unifying forces using Toryces introduced by Dr. Ginzburg. That chapter needs a lot of focus and meditation.

The limitation of modern physics comes from neglecting the Source Field and the Vortex Theory. If you want to be successful physicists, take these two theories seriously.

Thank you Dr. Ginzburg for all the effort in introducing unification theory based on the Spiral Field Theory. I just wonder what a relativity spiral field theory would look like in the future, and regret that this theory has been buried in secrecy for many centuries until you resurrected it.

Causal Spiraling Vortex Forces

The book, Prime Elements, by Dr. Vladimir B. Ginzburg, begins by giving a thorough historical review of the efforts made by the great philosophers and scientists of history to describe the Causal Spiral Forces of Nature. Since the words 'Spiral' and 'Spirit' are intimately related, I have defined Spiritual Science as really being the Science of the Spiral Forces of Nature. It should now be quite obvious, to all serious thinkers, that Physical Science alone will never be able to describe the real Living Cosmos that is Conscious and is continuously being projected into being by the powers of the Cosmic Mind! The success of Theoretical Physics thus far is directly proportional to the extent to which it has encoded Spiral Action and Dr. Ginzburg has thoroughly discussed this in his book.

Just as Newton's description of gravitational forces acting at a distance was greatly inspired by his study of esoteric hermitic philosophy, Dr. Ginzburg's formulation of his Three-dimensional Spiral String Theory has been greatly inspired by the spiritual revelations of such great philosophers as Pathagoras, Walter Russell and Emanual Swedenborg as well as the clairvoyant investigation into the structure of the atom by the Theosophical Society and other esoteric researchers.

I and my beloved soulmate are in the process of developing a Universal Language for physical and spiritual science.
