About the Author
Dr. John Litva is director of the Communications Research Laboratory and professor of electrical and computer engineering at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. A principal investigator and thrust leader with the Telecommunications Research Institute of Ontario (TRIO), he also serves as a consultant to both government and industry. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from University of Western Ontario. Dr. Titus Lo holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University, where he is a senior research engineer for the Communications Research Laboratory. Currently he is researching the design, development, and application of intelligent antennas in wireless communications.

Has a place of honor on my reference shelf.

Many books on writing are strictly craft books. Some are about becoming "pro" - dealing with editors, managing your PR. This is not about that. WILD MIND is about practicing the art of writing and about the life of one writer, Natalie Goldberg. But is so clearly instructive, so vividly stimulating, that reading it will automatically boost your own creative fires, and very likely your output. So...in its way, it is a surprisingly practical book.
Like her earlier WRITING DOWN THE BONES, Goldberg has created another wonderful resource for the writer at any stage of his/her craft. She's evolved, refined and developed the exercises presented in Bones, as well as added new ideas. A favorite of mine is to read work aloud often. She writes: "Write, read,write, read. You become less attached to whether it is good or bad. 'I wrote this now I'll read it, no big deal.' " She gives guidelines for working in a writer's group, and has many "try this" suggestions sandwiched in between anecdotal moments from her life which enrich and strengthen us.
As a professional writer for 25 years, I personally learned from this book mid career and continue to revisit eleven years later. A must have for any writer.

A Writing Classic

Natalie Goldberg's insights about writing as a spirtual practice are just as valid today as they were in 1986 when this book was first published. Her suggestions to writers work, both for beginning writers and for writers who depend on words in order to make a living. I recommend this book to the emerging writers I mentor as a must-have reference second only to a good dictionary.
As a professional writer who has written over 20 books and 500 magazine articles, I've given Writing Down the Bones away several times after mistakenly deciding that I'd outgrown it. Just as often I've had to go out and buy another copy to remind myself that there's more to the writing life than rejections, and royalties. Every time I reread it, I find something new. Last year I read Goldberg's memoir, Long Quiet Highway: Waking Up in America, which provides insights about how she came to her beliefs about writing and spirituality. I suggest reading both books.

So Good I Couldn't Put It Down

When I took a creative writing course a few years ago, Natalie Goldberg's "Writing Down the Bones" was a required text. It was so good I couldn't put it down.
Natalie points out that all beginning writers are controlled by their "inner censor" and therefore write what they think other people want to hear, or they put a false face on their writing. Natalie does indeed "free the writer within," by giving us permission to "just write sh--" (her words,not mine). The gist of the book is this: just write. Go for volume, not quality. The quality will come as you gain experience and lose your inhibitions. Natalie says everything you write, not just the good stuff but the bad as well, creates a "compost heap of the mind." It stays in your subconscious and mellows and ripens, ready to fertilize your skills and imagination for future writing projects. I actually put Natalie's suggestions into practice and kept a writer's journal for several years (and still do), and wrote thousands of words. I feel that my writing skills did indeed improve and even shine.
Natalie also discusses some things to try, like writing in different places, and discusses useful topics like metaphor and simile. Her book is not a technical manual, but rather an easy read, a personal insight into the joy and freedom from uninhibited writing. I always recommend this book first to anyone who expresses an interest in learning to write.

This is the first adult novel by an author who has written two well-received YA books. Livvy Dunne is a thoughtful 24-year-old with yearnings toward archeology, who in a rash moment in WWII Colorado becomes pregnant by a dashing officer and is forced into a marriage of convenience by her sternly puritanical minister father. She goes off to Ray Singleton's remote farm knowing nothing about him except that he is lonely, utterly inexperienced around women and touchingly devoted to her. The relationship between the two, graced by some delicate, perceptive and fine-boned writing, is at the heart of the book, and Creel gets it all just right. She is also skilled at evoking the peculiar remoteness from the war of the high plains country, where farmers were regarded as an integral part of the war effort and even got enough gas to drive around for pleasure, a rare privilege in 1944. Lonesome Livvy yearns for more communicative companionship, however, and grows close to a pair of charming Nisei sisters at an internment camp and this is where plot devices begin to play an unwarranted role. For Rose and Lorelei, it turns out, will do anything for love and involve Livvy in what develops into a dangerous (and inherently improbable) exercise in deceit and manipulation. The book recovers its stride for a poignant if rather hasty finish, but the calm spell cast by the tale of Livvy and Ray, which would have been perfectly satisfactory to maintain the book, has been broken.

Beautully told story, well- written novel

The book opens with Olivia Dunne, a twenty- four year old with big dreams, being forced into an arranged marriage after succumbing to the advances of a handsome solder in 1944. It turns out her husband is a good man, but Olivia has nothing in common with the farmers that now surround her, and she befriends two girls, Japanese- Americans who were interned in a camp nearby. Their story culminates in a politically charged incident, based on actual events, involving the girls and German POWs from another camp. Olivia eventually begins to love her new home and even her husband, as she learns to make the best of what life has given her. Through Livvy's eyes, we feel the camp and the isolation of rural life only to discover an unexpected enchantment. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the sweet, often heart- wrenching dialogue between Livvy and Ray, and the vivid description of life on a farm in Colorado in 1944. As I read I felt I was there; the author creates a strong sense of "place." The incident between the Japanese- American girls and the German POW's is a bonus and made me turn the pages even faster. From a historical perspective, I learned of Japanese internment camps and German prisoner of war camps in Colorado and the impact they had on the people there.

The book's ending is not pretty and happy

I stumbled upon the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie of this book and was smitten with the story. The movie, as it turns out, deviates from the book, most noticeably in the ending. The book's ending is not pretty and happy, as the movie. And, while I enjoyed the happy ending of the movie, the book's ending means more. With depth and complexity, Creel tells a story of loneliness, redemption, betrayal, and what makes a heart and home.
Her prose is surprisingly descriptive, but without being flowery - somewhat like the desolate beauty Olivia finds in the country. With deft language, Creel sets us in rural America during WWII, and shows us what it was like to be behind the scenes, to farm, to live, to work, to exist, when all the world was focus so far away.
Watching Olivia change into who she didn’t know she wanted to be, was magnificent. I enjoyed the subtle growth in her character. Told in first person, Creel really lets us see the turmoil inside this girl. As for the secondary characters, each was complex, distinct, and well-written.
There is a bite to this romance that comes from the true-to-life mistakes and frailness of the human condition. I highly recommend this work. It was a fantastic read.

This book takes us back to World War II and intertwines history with a personal life story of the times. Just the history of Colorado was interesting, especially to me since I am a native. "Ordinary Days," is just how the story unfolds, a testament to all those people of America that sacrificed every day for the cause. They just accepted the way things were and went on with productive lives. The author gives us an unusual romantic story and gently weaves in Japanese internment and German POWs, A reminder for today, don't judge all people for the crimes of a few.

Good persuasion tool for managers

This is not the best media skills book on the market, especially if you are working with volunteer or advocacy groups who need things broken down more simply and visually. However, it covers the basics and works well as an academic "bible" if you need to convince peers or management to adopt new tactics. Every PR pro can whine for hours about clients and bosses who don't want to grasp the importance of identifying goals and target audiences before jumping into the tactics. (Too many people think seeing a news clip or their name in the paper is success, even if it doesn't really help advance their cause.) This book gives a good overview for managers seeking an understanding of strategy and is a "valid" source when pros are making the case to be more strategic when developing a media plan so that organizations can win.

Excellent book for beginners in non-profit PR

I use this book to teach a beginning workshop in public relations for non-profit organizations as part of a continuing education program at a local community college. The book is an excellent resource for individuals who are not familar with public relations. It takes the reader through all of the things that he or she will need to do to effectively promote his or her organization.

Quite Useful for Students

The Jossey-Bass Guide to Strategic Communications for Nonprofits is a detailed examination of the relationship between nonprofits and the media. As the title says, it provides a step-by-step guide for nonprofits to establish effective relations with the media that result in publicity. My professor recommended this book to me, and I'm finding it quite useful. It has a similar approach to Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine; both are about maximizing your return on investment.
I especially enjoyed this book because I'm thinking about working for a nonprofit after graduation, and I haven't seen anywhere near as much about public relations and publicity for nonprofits as I've seen for corporations.

Dear Reader,

I have been through all kinds of experiences in my life, and I have faced struggles ranging from addiction to depression, all the while on a search for self-discovery and happiness. There are always going to be highs and lows, heartbreaks and victories, and everything in between. So sometimes the smallest few words can make all the difference; they can comfort and they can inspire.

Each day I meditate and pray by getting in touch with the higher power within me. No matter how old you are, where you come from, your race or religion, it is vital to have a higher power--something bigger than yourself that you can turn to for comfort. For me, it's God, but for you, it can be anything you believe in, the universe, karma, etc. Though some days can be a struggle, it's important to have something that will motivate, inspire, and help us stay positive and keep moving forward.

This book is a collection of my own words, quotes that inspire me, as well as lessons, meditations, reflections, and daily goals. They have helped me tremendously, and it's a special and personal gift that I want to share with all of you.

I first met Demi over breakfast at the London Hotel in the summer of 2012. Her career was on fire. She had a huge hit in "Skyscraper," "Give Your Heart a Break" was climbing the charts (it would eventually hit #1), and she was months away from being named a judge on The X Factor alongside Simon Cowell and Britney Spears.

For a girl who had just turned 20 and made her name as a Disney teen queen, she seemed wise beyond her years. But she encountered more than a few bumps on her road to success. Demi shared her personal struggles with me, including her battles with anorexia and bulimia, bullying, self-harm and bipolar disorder, and how these challenges almost derailed her career.

As a mother of two daughters, I was so grateful that Demi was using her painful experiences to talk frankly to girls and let them know that fame doesn't necessarily shield you from insecurity and self-doubt. By pulling back the glossy curtain of celebrity and exposing her all-too-human side, I know Demi made countless young women with some of those same problems feel much less alone.

Not long after our first meeting, I welcomed Demi to the set of my daytime talk show. No surprise, she was charismatic and generous. Her willingness to speak so openly in a public forum inspired me to share my own experience with an eating disorder in my twenties, something that I had never spoken about before. Demi's honesty made me feel safe to be honest about my own past.

Demi has a unique relationship with her fans. They love her and she loves them right back. She's taught us all that we need to give our hearts a break at the low moments, and take the time to enjoy the view from the skyscraper when we hit our highs.

About the Author

Twenty-one-year-old Demi Lovato's fame began when she was cast on Barney and Friends. From the outside, she was all smiles, but as she grew up in front of the camera―the star of the record-breaking Camp Rock franchise; leading lady of her own Disney show, Sonny with a Chance; and a budding music career―she was falling apart. As Demi entered adolescence, she was being bullied, and she struggled with bulimia, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, and eventually secretly began cutting herself.

Her career was taking off, but she bowed out of her world-wide tour and checked herself into rehab, which she successfully completed. She started the Lovato Treatment Scholarship program to help others with their illnesses.

She's currently entering her second season as an X-Factor judge and her latest album Demi has gone platinum. She will also be joining the fifth season of Glee. Demi has many accolades, including one MTV Video Music Award, twenty-five Teen Choice Awards nominations, 14 of which she has won, four People's Choice Awards, one ALMA award, a Billboard Touring Award and several others.

Outside of her work in the entertainment industry, Lovato is involved in philanthropic activity through charity work and various social and environmental causes. Great book for all ages.

I bought this for my 14 year old granddaughter. I thought it would be easy reading but inspirational at the same time.. It's set up as one page for each day of the year. I started to just glace through it and found it so good I read most of it. Demi Lavato could have written a book about her life as a child star and glamorized her life. But instead, she gives you ideas and inspirations so that you can learn and mature.

Demi Lovato's book is amazing. Filled with quotes she has personally chosen, it really describes her as a person, and shows how much she is willing to do to support those in need. Although I haven't finished reading yet, each day I read a page and it inspires my day. It's well worth reading.

About the Author

Justin Forest has five college degrees, including a MLSt in taboo studies and a PhD in literature and criticism.

While working as an English professor for over a decade, Forest has edited various academic journals and published poetry and fiction.

Previously, Forest compiled information for the United Nations on the anti-child sex trafficking movement and has since transitioned to a sexuality researcher and member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. He now teaches themes of girlhood and sexuality and also acts as a supporting member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists.

Forest currently lives in the United States with his wife and children.

I had occasion to work with sex offfenders for ten years. I found that they were just average people who gave in to an impulse and got caught. None of them were the violent predators that the media make them out to be. Of course violent predators exist, but they were not allowed into this program. That being said, many of the issues that were raised during the treatment process, were also addressed in this book by Justin Forest. Our societ ies Victorian attit;udes are making criminals of anyone who has even thought about sex, meaning all of us. Forest brings to light how harmful these attitudes have become. Sex has long been considered "bad" or "evil" in our society. It is not. If nothing else, this book brings to the front the need for much better education as our children are growing up to prevent so many irrational sexual attitudes in adulthood. The media and government need to become more educated and accept that sex offenders are not all the same and adjust the laws to take that into consideration. For example, why is public urination a sex crime? My hat is off to Justin Forest for writing this book.

It was a look in to the unthinkable. Compelling and a come to terms type of novel. A good read. Not for the faint of heart.

Very difficult to Follow.

I really tried to make it through this book. I just did not understand what the author was trying to convey.
I normally read a book within a day or two, but this one I kept putting it down and thinking when will it get better.
The author was all over the place. Jumping back and forth between the present and the past.
The story did not flow and I just could not figure out what point he was trying to make other than he loved all females of all ages.

This is a nice book for collectors & Sonic Youth fans but yeah. No content really. It's a very slim volume of photos and a short essay, which I did enjoy, but it's certainly not an autobiography or anything.
