Perhaps the best book out there

Even though both of Barry's books compliment each other, I think this is the more important one. If you really put the effort, it can transform your playing and improvising and take you to a very high level as a musician. He goes in-depth, explaining how do you approach and put into practice the patterns you learn, and when do you use them, how to connect them, how to phrase in a meaningful fashion. Really, the best book on the subject I have come across, and I've seen many.

Great jazz book!

I have been playing bass professionally for 45 years. This is the best book of it's kind that I have found. I wish I'd had it years ago! I found it after hours of searching the internet for info about a a theory question that was puzzling me and I found it clearly explained in this book, along with a lot of other very useful material. Bassists should not be put off by the treble clef as the examples are clear, logical and easy to read. In fact this book is great for bassists as the exercises are single line patterns.It's a good idea to work through Book 1 first.

I like textbooks with the continuation, when the more difficult part on the basis of the previous book will allow you to deepen and master the technical skills and theoretical knowledge. This applies to both the books of the author.

There is a web sight and code you can enter after each chapter for a on line test. IT then scores it for you. You have the ability to retake the tests as many times as needed.
