My first book, How To Be a Writer: Building Your Creative Skills Through Practice and Play, focused on the skills writers must use in coming up with material for pieces of writing. But great ideas, scenes, characters, story--they aren't enough to keep people reading your work. You also have to produce excellent writing--that's what agents and editors are looking for.
Many aspiring writers believe only the talented few can produce great sentences. But that isn't true. In the scientific field of expertise studies, researchers have shown that talent has little to do with building expertise; what counts is dedication to deliberate practice. Just like experts in other fields, you can build and develop your skills in writing craft through guided practice and imitating models of excellence.
I developed this skills-building program for students in an MFA program in creative writing. Now, in Spellbinding Sentences, I make it available to writers of all kinds. Here you'll be shown what to practice, and how to practice, as you take one step after another along the path to writing mastery. With mastery comes the confidence that you know what you're doing as you write and revise. That confidence is available to anyone willing to put time and energy into practicing skills.
About the Author
Barbara Baig is the creator of The Mastery Path for Writers, an innovative way to� develop writing expertise. This approach is the result of her thirty years' experience teaching writing to adults and young adults. Barbara founded the popular Writing Workshops at Harvard Divinity School, where she taught for two decades. She now teaches in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Lesley University and online at Where Writers Learn. Her first book was How To Be a Writer: Building Your Creative Skills through Practice and Play.

Nitty, gritty exercises that can transform your writing. The work is worth it.

Full disclosure: I hired Barbara Baig about 3 years ago after reading her book "How to Become a Writer." I was mostly interested in getting a better understanding of English grammar and syntax, but about 18 months ago I started asking her to look at scenes from a novel I was struggling with. Yesterday I learned I made the finalist list in the 2015 Faulkner-Wisdom Novel-in-Progress contest. That would never have happened without Baig's instruction.
By the time I started working with Baig, I'd been a freelance book copyeditor for 15 years and was moving to a corporate position, where it was no longer enough to know the Chicago Manual of Style and have a "gut instinct" on how to edit something and make it better; I had to be able to debate grammar, syntax, and style with professional journalists on a daily basis. Stuff I should've been taught in elementary school but never was. Stuff that I learned working with Baig and by doing many of the exercises she suggests in her new book.
When she first explained her approach 3 years ago, I was HIGHLY skeptical. It didn't sound like fun and I didn't think it would work. Boy, was I wrong.
I can see how to some people Baig's exercises seem be "boring" and "repetitive." Everyone is different. All I can say is that these nitty, gritty exercises, done repeatedly over weeks and months, transformed my writing. Made it easier for me to express what I want when I want. And to explain to others what I was doing when I edited their work.
Over the years I've become wary of "how to write" books. Many are entertaining and full of inspirational prose. But they weren't making my writing any better. Baig's books cover the unsexy but necessary drill work being a good writer demands--the kind of drill work I needed to take my writing to the next level.

A Great Tool for Writers

In Spellbinding Sentences, Barbara Baig offers writers a new set of tools to improve their writing. She understands that the only way to use words precisely is to know them intimately and she helps readers gain the necessary skills through practical exercises. Free writing, vocabulary building, and the study of the dictionary and thesaurus are just a few of the many methods she employs to help readers broaden their language skills. She analyzes the quality of words, whether they are formal or informal, generic or specific, or abstract or concrete, and the subtle differences found in the connotations of synonyms. Sensory details are explored at length before Baig offers an extensive section on grammar. This is more than a refresher course for those who’ve forgotten the difference between a transitive and intransitive verb. Baig delves deeply into each part of speech and shows how they work separately and together as building blocks toward simple and complex sentences. Her analysis is similar to diagramming sentences, but without the pictorial framework which was always a part of that old-school task. Charts illustrating sentence patterns help break down the complexity of sentence construction, making it feel simple to plug in nouns, verbs, etc. to create compelling sentences full of modifiers or independent clauses. The author also offers numerous examples to illustrate her points. Baig’s methods are straightforward, practical, and highly achievable as long as one is ready to sit down and work. The book is not a quick read, but one that should be visited on a regular basis, like a school course, with each exercise building on the previous one. As Baig writes, “Mastery of diction and syntax enables you to wield a kind of magical power over the minds of your readers.” For those willing to set aside time to proceed through each task, the rewards will be found in controlling that magical power with ease and finesse.

A grammar book by any other name is still a grammar book.

A popular NY literary agent today, recommended this book on her blog, so I bought it and read it all. I didn't find anything useful beyond what an English student might require.The book purports to be aimed at writers eager to "captivate readers with excellent writing," but it reads like a grammar text, and like all textbooks, you'll find a great deal of over-explaining inside. Example: The author spends gobs of time detailing what a sentence is and what a phrase is, and all the variations thereof. She goes on and on about the parts of speech, explaining each. She talks about "appositives," "syntactic structures," "right-branching sentences," (don't forget "left-branching sentences") as well as "sentences with forward movement." There is also an abundance of writing exercises, exercises I can't see many writers or would-be writers tackling unless they have a course to pass.This book will not improve your writing, just your grammar.
