Review
" . . . a master of making difficult things seem simple, without compromising their profundity . . . Macleod is simultaneously an able apologist and a world class exegete . . . Learn from Macleod. Argue with Macleod. And then bow the knee to your Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, and worship." ~ Ligon Duncan (Chancellor and CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary)

This outstanding theological work covers the major system of doctrine in the Westminster Confession of Faith. It originated as a series of lectures that MacLeod gave in several Scottish churches in the late 80s adnearly 90s. he clearly and masterfully communicates the truth of Scripture and the reformed faith.I particularly recommend that pastors and ruling elders use this book in officer training. Not only will it whet their appetites for theological study, but will prepare them as spiritual leaders of the church to teach and apply Scripture to people's lives. It will also help them answer questions people ask as they come to an understanding of the reformed faith. ~ Equip for Ministry

Donald MacLeod's A Faith To Live By is a welcome and timely reminder that the Christian faith must be proclaimed by both word and action. MacLeod's lucid presentation of The Westminster Confession of Faith is sensitively combined with contemporary application in a way that both instructs one's mind but also motivates hands and feet to hold out the word of truth to a generation that is both without God and hope. ~ Themelios Journal

... one of the finest theologians Scotland has produced in a long time. Professor Macleod displays an originality of thought and sharp clarity of expression which will enable a new generation of readers to enter sympathetically into an understanding of the Reformed Faith. ~ ATB McGowan (Minister, East Church of Scotland, Inverness)

"A person who does not have a formal Bible or theological education can read and enjoy Macleod." ~ Eric C. Redmond (Executive Pastoral Assistant and Bible Professor in Residence New Canaan Baptist Church, Washington, DC Council Member, The Gospel Coalition)

'Donald Macleod is the people's theologian - or at least he would be in a sane world. He never loses sight for a moment that he is addressing people who are hurting or confused or ill-informed or tempted.' ~ Alex MacDonald (Minister of Buccleuch & Greyfriars Free Church of Scotland, Edinburgh)

'Here we have first rate Christian theology, exceedingly encouraging for a Christian teacher who knows a lot, and marvellous illumination for the Christian neophyte who knows nothing, but wants to learn.' ~ Dick Lucas (Formerly Rector of St Helen's Bishopsgate, London)

"Here is excellent theology made both relevant and exciting. I can think of no better book for equipping Christians to present their faith intelligently and attractively to real people. ~ John Nicholls (Associate Minister, Smithton Free Church of Scotland, Inverness, formerly Chief Executive, London City Mission)

Superb Summary of the Reformed Faith
By A Customer
This is the best summary of the Reformed Christian faith that any student of divinity can get hold of. It should be required reading for every pastor.
A Faith to Live By is a short systematic theology, particularly attractive for the christian layman or laywoman. It covers the doctrines of God, Man, Sin, Salvation, Christian Discipleship and the Second Coming.
Professor Macleod is the master of his subject. He is consistently lucid, succint and pastoral. Like all truly learned man, he admits uncertainty, but maintains tolerance of opposing views, where the Bible is silent.
This book is unadulterated reformed theology at its Scottish best. It makes none of the compromises that modern American presbyterianism tends to make vis a vis the Westminster Confession of Faith.
In every sense, a superb book and highly recommended. Having read it through twice, I envy those who must be studying under Macleod.

A good popular Systematic Theology
By George VANPOPTA
Review by Rev. George van Popta
This book began as two series of lectures that Professor Macleod, a Free Church of Scotland theologian, delivered. Professor Macleod has an impressive gift for making the complex simple. In twenty-six chapters he deals admirably with most of the main and sub points of dogmatics from scripture and the Trinity to hell and heaven. The confessionally Reformed reader will appreciate the chapters and benefit greatly.
One might want to put some question marks in the margins of the chapter on creation where he is not hostile to the thought of the universe being thousands of millions of years old. He suggests we might do well to interpret the six days as creation eras rather than days as we know them. He does, however, reject Darwinism.
One may not agree with every thought or turn of phrase, but there is much to be learned and gained from reading this popular exposition of the points of theology. One can only admire Macleod's facility as a teacher.

Definitely one for your bookshelf (or Kindle)
By gentnsc
I thought it was a very complete presentation of basic Christian doctrines. I also thought the author did a good job with many of his "illustrations" that I felt helped explain many concepts in an understandable way. He also seemed careful at times to note what HIS personal beliefs on several things were so you wouldn't assume his coverage of them intended to be "authoritative"! I was also pleased to see I could download a "KINDLE version" to my I-Pad that kept me from having to always carry the book WITH me and will allow me to easily refer back to things from time to time!
