Amazon.com Review
Every culture in history has had its own myths to help explain the world through the power of story. This engaging book offers a delightful, sweeping view of world mythology--not just the famous stories of the Greeks and Romans, but also the stories of Native Americans and legends from South America, Africa, Scandinavia, Asia, and Australia. Young readers will learn about Zeus and Pandora from Greece, King Arthur from England, Maui-of-a-Thousand-Tricks from Polynesia, the Rainbow Serpent from West Africa, and dozens of other colorful, larger-than-life characters from around the world.

Myth-master Neil Philip has taken a thematic approach, organizing the legends around themes such as creation myths, fertility and cultivation, gods and animals, and visions of the end. Within each theme, eight to twelve myths from different cultures are retold, enhanced by abundant full-color illustrations and photographs of related sites or artifacts. At the side of each page are further explanations of characters or situations in the stories. The appendix includes a section called "Who's Who in Mythology," with the pronunciation for each name and charts of both the Greek and Norse Pantheons. Philip's retellings are clear and powerful, retaining the flavor and message of each story. This fascinating book of myths belongs on every young scholar's bookshelf. (Ages 9 to 13)

From Publishers Weekly
Philip has sifted through myths from numerous cultures-Inuit, Aborigine, Native American, Greek, Norse, African and Celtic, among others-skillfully winnowing them down to a representative selection arranged around such topics as "Fertility and Cultivation," "Creation" and "Visions of the End." Thoroughly researched, diverse and richly retold, it's a first-rate collection, showcased with DK's signature design style, featuring an attractive blend of photographs and full-color illustrations. A "Who's Who in Mythology" and an index make this a one-stop volume for those desiring an overview of world mythology. Ages 8-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8?This collection represents a wide variety of world cultures and stories. Selections are grouped by type (creation myths, fertility and cultivation, visions of the end), which helps readers understand the commonality of the tales. The standard Greek and Norse myths are here, but what makes this volume special is its inclusion of less frequently anthologized stories of the Aztecs, Haitians, Africans, and Japanese, to name a few. Native American myths are here as well. The writing is clear, but not as dramatic as the stories deserve. Unique features of the book are the small, full-color photographs and drawings of related geography, flora, fauna, and artifacts that accompany each entry and create concrete images for abstract topics. In addition, Mistry's small illustrations for each myth colorfully feature and label its characters. The Who's Who in Mythology section defines most of the characters mentioned and includes pronunciations. Students will find a broader variety of information in the Facts on File Encyclopedia of World Mythology & Legend (1988), though that title is less accessible to younger readers. Goddesses, Heroes and Shamans (Kingfisher, 1994) is not as well done as Philip's volume, but is similar in style and format.?Cheri Estes, Detroit Country Day School Middle School, Beverly Hills, MI

The Book
By Serena
Between 1999-2002 I stumbled across this book in my school library, this is "The Book" (ironically, I remembered more of it's title than I thought I did) and some of it's imagery stayed with me as I have studied world mythology ever since.

I couldn't find the like of those illustrations no matter where I looked, finally I got tired of not knowing. I went to the link of my old middle school, and I searched "mythology" in the library database so I had a better place to start.

There was this book "The Book", offered on Amazon.com and I took a "inside peek" and there it was, sure enough just as I remembered; a image of Re and all the Egyptian gods and goddesses, Shu and Tefnut, Nut and Geb, and Nut swallowing Re and Re wrestling with Apep - the Egyptian day and night.

Ymir the giant, and Audhumla the cow, and others, so many others it's like seeing old friends and greeting them again.

I now have my own copy of the "The Book", and am pleased that a memory I held in my heart for more than ten years was no mere myth.

Very educational
By Bridget S.
I purchased the Illustrated Book of Myths for my daughter when she's older, and it's so engaging (well written and lots of colorful illustrations) that I have already read it myself cover to cover. I learned much about the history and evolution of world myths. These stories provide a useful foundation for understanding pre-monotheistic belief systems, and about the precursors of many stories I had wrongly assumed originated in monotheistic religion, i.e., Noah's Ark, Adam & Eve, etc. Children and adults alike should be aware of these stories when forming their own worldview.

Child appropriate
By zm
Love how thorough the stories are & especially how little kid friendly. I dont have to worry about any inappropriate pictures like in every other kids' legends/myths book. Very well done & im so glad we have this in our library.
