Problem "Fake url without audio samples for download" successfully solved

I have to say it is a good book, easy to understand, full with good advices BUT I'm disappointed because there is no any audio file for download on url I found in the book. URL doesn't exist. And such a book really doesn't work well without sound examples. I wrote mail to publisher, I hope they will respond to me. Shame.

With good audio samples attached to book it can be 5 stars...

After e-mail I sent to publisher I received good url for audio files, so I'll do what I promised and change my rating for this book to... 5 STARS!

George W. Bush’s decisions were all correct. It was just the aftermath that sometimes became muddled. That, at least, is the impression one gets after reading this surprisingly robust memoir. For those who have missed “43” in the public eye (and for those who haven’t as well), his voice is evident on every page. Cocky, defiant, and, at times (especially when speaking about his family), emotional, this is the George Bush who insists that “everybody” believed there were weapons of mass destruction, that much of the blame for the post-Katrina fiasco should be put on Louisiana’s local governments, and that Harriet Miers would have made a fine Supreme Court justice, given the chance. He does admit some mistakes (“Mission Accomplished”), but he stands by his big decisions and backs up his claims, which is simpler to do when the other side isn’t chiming in with their opinions and/or facts. Those who have followed Bush and his presidency will find many of the personal stories here familiar (how he stopped drinking; his whirlwind romance with Laura), but there are some fascinating reveals as well, including his affection for Ted Kennedy, his sometimes-complicated relationship with Dick Cheney, and his read-between-the-lines digs at Colin Powell. Some political memoirs (hello, Bill Clinton) are bloated journeys that devolve into pages and pages of, “and then I met . . .” Bush, smartly dividing the book into themes rather than telling the story chronologically, offers readers a genuine (and highly readable) look at his thought processes as he made huge decisions that will affect the nation and the world for decades. The Liberal rating.

So first off I'm pretty left. I didn't buy this book with the intention of hating President Bush. In fact despite the policy problems and the damage to the economy under his administration I don't "hate" him or anyone.

So with that being said I found it nice to gain a personal perspective with a person who is challenged daily with decisions the average person couldn't fathom. What makes this man and his mind work? Why did he make choices that made me so angry? Why did the press constantly berate him regardless of what he did? These things I wanted answers on and I got them in this book.

There are many things that none of us ever hear about and those things were better clarified here. I can understand the challenges the man faced and from a historical perspective I actually feel I've learned a lot about the way the upper ranks of US Government act in the present day. I've seen some comments on here about not telling the truth and whatnot but feel those are from left wing fanatics that just cant open their mind to the truth that a president is a human.

The writing at times is somewhat childish but I'm also happy it's not over the wall in a "Rhodes Scholar" kind of way. It's in a basic story telling format with dips and dives into major events that we all know about by now if we've bothered to buy this book. I'm happy that it's not a bang on the drums Republican story that tries to shove ideals down my throat. In fact it's simply this man sharing what he feels and why he did what he did. I was particularly drawn to the Stem Cell chapter because I followed that closely when it happened and always felt the president was lambasted for the press, the Democratic party, and the bloggers benefit.

This tells me a lot of what I already know about the current political climate and the way people are so polarized. It clears up many lies from the media that I knew were lies as they graced the TV on various channels. It also clarifies the truths that I knew and the reason I didn't vote for him.

Either way it's good to crawl inside the mind of a president for a few hours and understand what makes them tick.

Not what you might expect...

"That is the nature of the presidency. Perceptions are shaped by the clarity of hindsight. In the moment of decision, you don't have that advantage." -G. Bush

In a lot of ways this statement just about sums up the book. The President of the United States, maybe more so than any other person on the face of the Earth, has his/her every decision microscopically analyzed by just about everyone... after the fact, when the results are known and more information is available. I thought this to be a very interesting premise for a presidential memoir. It doesn't come across as an apology nor does it come across as an excuse. President Bush gives you the situation as he saw it and lets you make your own decision.

I am not a huge fan of President Bush, but I don't think he is the utter failure as President that some consider him. I come away with some empathy (though short of being President, I don't think anyone could truly grasp the reality) for President Bush. Could things have been done better... more than likely. Could they have been worse... almost certainly... but how many of us couldn't apply those phrases to our own lives?

If you are a Bush fan, I'd almost guarantee you'll like the book. If you aren't a fan.... you'll probably find some more ammunition to bash him. For myself, I don't at all regret the time spent reading the book and that is usually the measure that I put on literary material.

Review of the Book, not the President

Most of the reviews here are not of the book but of the President, so typically the reviews are falling along party lines (similar to way too many things these days). It should be possible to review the book as an autobiography and not a political commentary. That said, the book is an interesting reflection by President Bush on his perception of his life and actions. It is not a work of master prose. The President writes like he speaks. The thoughts are straight forward and often simple, but they are his. It is not insightful but it is revealing. If you are looking for insight into the workings of Washington or an assessment of policy, this book is not for you. If you want to read about how President Bush views his life and presidency, the book does a pretty good job of that. It often leaves the reader with questions and certainly does not contain deep reflection (that will take many more years to develop), but it is the George W Bush talking about George W Bush as he sees himself and his presidency today.

Cute patterns but the pattern instructions are terrible.

I like that this book includes patterns to make all sorts of sea creatures, categorized by habitat, with little tidbits of info about the real creature. Very cute.

However, the written patterns are terrible. Absolutely horrible. I used to work in a yarn shop and have taught countless knitting classes, and have never seen such poorly written patterns. The author did not write these patterns in typical knitting shorthand, which is more or less standard throughout knitting patterns, making reading these simple patterns way more complicated than it should be. There are awkward graph-like things to describe some of the patterns, which are a poor attempt at combining a traditional graph and a drawing. Even the patterns that are actually graphed are wrong. The copy editor for this book seriously needs to re-think their profession.

In several places the author fails to communicate steps and/or instructions, so I am left with a fully knit fiddler crab that I have no idea how to assemble. Also the anemone in the photo clearly has more spiney things than the pattern says. I'm beginning to think the author doesn't actually know how to knit.

The photos are better than some knitting pattern books I have seen, but the lack of instructions makes this book not worth buying.

What a fun book!

I really appreciated this book's overall design and thought going over each section would help in 'seeing' what it has to offer. First, the beginning of this book has a very short section devoted to an overview of knitting and crochet skills. This is just an overview.

The next section is a very useful gallery or 'Directory' of the projects set in various habitats (The Beach, Tidepool, The Shallows, Octopuses' Garden, Coral Reef, Atoll, Open Ocean, and The Deep). It shows all the finished creatures, shells, coral, or seaweed at a glance over 16 pages.

Following this is the main pattern section of the book. There are 42 knitted and 33 crochets items. Each pattern features a picture of the finished item, clear directions and font, and a chart to follow if necessary (not all patterns have charts). There are many unusual creatures featured in this book. They are well done and very realistic looking (my only complaint is the Great White Shark is all white, which in reality, it is partly gray...easy to fix). I love 'The Deep' ones, especially the Anglerfish, whose mouth could, just for fun, be used as a place to store a ring or bracelet. I would recommend this for someone who loves the sea, or lives by water and wants to do some cute decorating, or for those who just want to create novel knitted or crocheted items. Have fun with it!

Fun and cute, but the instructions are sloppy

I was given this book as a gift and it has been a lot of fun just looking at all the patterns and dioramas. Knitting them, however, can be quite a challenge. The book is probably a little too advanced for me (I'm somewhere in between beginning and intermediate) but the real problem is that the author often leaves out huge details, such as knitting the jellyfish in the round, and in general just doesn't take the time to explain her patterns. Often there is some "finishing step" that doesn't quite make sense and leaves you with a weird triangle shape half-rolled into a burrito (Fair Isle Snail, I'm looking at you.)

I wouldn't say this book isn't worth buying because I have successfully made a few things, and I've had a lot of fun and learned a lot while doing it. Just keep in mind that you may very well find yourself supplementing the instructions in the book with help from Google, Youtube, and your craft-minded friends. Apparently it takes a village to knit a jellyfish.

That said, I study marine invertebrates and am delighted with all the inverts she chose to include in the book. Yeti crab? Pygmy squid? Even the humble tube worm? I'm willing to forgive the frustrating patterns just because the author thought to include these unsung heroes in her survey of ocean life.

An old beggar woman is accused of witchcraft when she is caught saving a communion wafer to cure the midwife's cow, which has gone dry. An unscrupulous inquisitorial judge, eager to revive his flagging career, tortures the two women until they confess to being witches and incriminate numerous other people in the area. Fear or opportunism make even the leading citizens go along with the judge's outrageous verdicts, which result in dozens of people perishing at the stakes. While the novel is steeped in details of the 17th-century life, its chilling observations about the potential misuse of fanatical ideology are still very relevant.

A very interesting and detailed book!

I loved this book. The details were wonderful, and the translation excellent! This is the story of a little town in CZECHOSLOVAKIA in the 1900's that has been victim of the late witch hunts. It all starts with a rumour that a hag in town is using communion hosts to cast spells, this causes an amazing stir in the community. This is a great book, you find greed, lies, sex, and compassion all in the same book. The translation looses nothing of the original text. Quite interesting, specially when it was written in the 1800's.
